Named for the chief of the Licatiut tribe, Marin County was one of the original counties in California created at the time of statehood in 1850.   The area was originally populated by the Coast Miwok Indians.  The remains of over 600 Miwok villages have been found in Marin County.   It is generally accepted that Sir Francis Drake and the crew of the Golden Hinde entered what is now Drake’s Bay on June 17, 1579 and explored the area for a little over a month. This was likely first English encampment in what eventually became the United States.

Marin County is quite affluent and has fifth highest income per capita in the United States.

The Marin County Civic Center was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and draws thousands of visitors each year.  Its iconic archways echo the surrounding rolling hills.
