LAKE COUNTY, CALIFORNIA OVERVIEW

The clients of Lake County mesothelioma lawyers are individuals and families who live in California’s beautiful Lake County, or were exposed to asbestos there, and whose lives have been tragically and irretrievably affected by mesothelioma.  Located in North Central California, directly north of the San Francisco Bay Area, Lake County is named for its beautiful and aptly named Clear Lake — the largest natural freshwater lake contained entirely in California (Lake Tahoe is shared with Nevada).  With 68 square miles of surface area, according to geologists it is probably one of the oldest lakes in North America having existed in its present form for 480,000 years.  Clear Lake is beloved by fishermen and is popularly known as being the “Bass Capital of the West” because two-thirds of the fish caught in it are largemouth bass.  It also teems with bluegill, crappie, carp, and catfish.  Its warm, spacious waters make it a perfect spot for watersports, with water skiing, wakeboarding, sailing and boat races being especially popular.  On the south shore of the lake stands Mount Konocti, a volcanic cone that last erupted some 11,000 years ago and as part of the “Pacific Ring of Fire” may yet erupt again.  Lake County is also part of California’s famous Wine Country and is home to over 30 wineries and 5 distinct wine growing appellations.  The American Lung Association has repeatedly rated Lake County as having the cleanest air in the United States.

Approximately 64,000 people call Lake County, California home. While its largest city is Clearlake, its county seat lies in historic Lakeport.  Many residents live in or near the smaller census-designated places of Clearlake Oaks, Clearlake Riviera, Cobb, Hidden Valley Lake, Kelseyville, Lower Lake, Lucerne, Middletown, Nice, North Lakeport, Soda Bay, Spring Valley, Upper Lake and unincorporated communities such as Finley, Glenhaven, Loch Lomond, Parramore Springs and Whispering Pines.

The Pomo people have lived in what is now Lake County, California for over 12,000 years and despite a period of enslavement, mistreatment and disease, continue to do so today. They have long been renowned for their intricate basketry made from lakeside tules and other native plants.  After a period of Spanish control, the mid-1850s brought American pioneers and European settlers to the region who started the ranches, farms, vineyards and orchards that last to this day.  Around this time, in 1861, portions of Napa, Mendocino and Colusa Counties were combined to form Lake County.  Lake County’s natural beauty quickly brought a wave of visitors and numerous luxury resorts were built around the region’s mineral springs catering to a wealthy clientele from San Francisco and beyond who came to “take the waters.” Ferryboat steamers plied Clear Lake taking tourists from town to town and a railroad was planned, but never built. The county was even visited by “gentleman bandit” Black Bart, who in 1882 robbed a stagecoach traveling from Lakeport to Cloverdale.

Lake County’s Mediterranean climate and volcanic-ash rich soil were almost immediately seen to be ideal for wine grapes, and Lake County’s first vines were planted as early as 1854.  Serranus C. Hastings, the founder of Hastings College of the Law and California’s first Chief Justice, began a vineyard in Lake County in the 1870s. Legendary British actress and socialite Lillie Langtry purchased acreage near Middletown, brought in a European winemaker, and established the Guenoc & Langtry Estate in the late 1880s – today this winery is known as Langtry Estate & Vineyards.

The 1906 earthquake set back local tourism (some say it caused the hot springs to go dry) and prohibition put Lake County’s wine industry on hiatus, but both have surged back since the 1960s.  Bartlett pear, walnut and other fruit orchards that had long been present, expanded greatly in Lake County during Prohibition and remain a major component of the region’s agricultural industry today. Lake County’s Kelseyville calls itself the “Pear Capital of the World,” where in 1999, 85,000 tons of pears were processed.

Lake County mesothelioma lawsuits may be handled in the Lake County civil court system.  They may also be filed in other California counties with civil court departments dedicated to handling mesothelioma lawsuits, even those arising in Lake County.  There are two civil court locations in Lake Country.  Most operations are based in the Lakeport Division at 255 North Forbes Street in Lakeport, just two blocks west of City Hall and the lakefront.  Some matters are also handled at the smaller Clearlake Branch, located at 7000 A, South Center Drive in Clearlake.  The “Old” Lake County Courthouse at 255 North Main in Lakeport, was built in 1870 and served as both a courthouse and as the local seat of government until 1968.  It is now a museum dedicated to Lake County history.  It was one of the few local buildings to survive the 1906 earthquake without any major damage.

Whereever a Lake County lawsuit may ultimately be filed, plaintiffs in Lake County mesothelioma lawsuits are often given calendar priority because many counties have dedicated Asbestos Departments allowing them to proceed to trial in an expediated manner and leading them to be resolved as quickly as possible.
