Placer County, California was founded on April 25, 1851.  It took its name from the Spanish word for sand or gravel deposits containing gold. Miners washed away the gravel, leaving the heavier gold, in a process known as “placer mining”. The discovery of gold in 1848 brought tens of thousands of miners from around the world, in addition to many more thousands intending to provide goods and services to the miners. Only three years after the discovery of gold, the fast-growing county was formed from portions of Sutter and Yuba counties. With the expansion of the Sacramento metropolitan area, Placer County has one of the fastest growing populations in the state. Gold mining was a major industry through the 1880’s, but gradually was replaced by farming, harvesting timber, and working for the railroad.

Currently the county’s three largest employers are Kaiser Permanente, Hewlett-Packard and the Placer County government. Placer is the 22nd-largest of California’s 58 counties. Moderate, dry days and cool nights characterize the summer months in Placer County. The temperature during the summer varies between the Valley and High Country areas. Typically, Valley temperatures are higher in summer and winter, while mountain temperatures are lower. The rainy season in Placer County occurs between November and April, but excessive rainfall and damaging windstorms are rare. The Sierra Nevada snow fields are a major source of water during the dry summer months.

Placer County mesothelioma lawsuits can be filed in the Placer County civil court system. The Placer Superior Court serves all people in Placer County as one of the state’s 58 county trial courts. The court has jurisdiction over all criminal cases including felonies, misdemeanors and infractions; all civil cases, including small claims, probate and conservatorships; family law/support cases; mental health and juvenile law cases.
