VENTURA COUNTY, CALIFORNIA OVERVIEW

Ventura County is on California’s Central Coast.  As of the 2019, the population of Ventura County was approximately 846,000. Its largest city is Oxnard, and its county seat is in Ventura.   Two of the Channel Islands, Anacapa Island and San Nicolas Island, are located within the boundaries of Ventura County.

Ventura County is bordered by Los Angeles County to the east, Kern County to the north, Santa Barbara County to the west, and the Pacific Ocean to the south.

Ventura County was named for Mission San Buenaventura, the ninth of the California missions, which in turn was named after the Italian Saint Bonaventure.

Cities in Ventura County include

  •           Camarillo
  •           Fillmore
  •           Moorpark
  •           Ojai
  •           Oxnard
  •           Port Hueneme
  •           Santa Paula
  •           Simi Valley
  •           Thousand Oaks
  •           Ventura (county seat)

Before the arrival of European settlers, Ventura County was home to the Chumash people.  The Chumash were known for their sea-going canoes, their rock paintings and for their intricate basketry.

Mission San Buenaventura was founded in 1782 and received its water from the Ventura River, via a 7-mile-long stone and mortar aqueduct.  The aqueduct enabled it to sustain its gardens and orchards even during the dry summer months.

In 1913, oil exploration began in Ventura County.  At its peak, the Ventura oilfield was producing 90,000 barrels of oil a day, with annual production of over a million and a half barrels. Today, the Ventura Oil Field has oil and gas operations covering over 4,000 acres.  There are still 400 active wells producing on average 12,000 barrels a day.

Agriculture has always played a significant role in Ventura County. Ventura is California’s 10th largest agricultural county, in terms of crop value.  It is the 11th largest in the country.  Ventura’s farmers grew grains initially, but eventually turned to the drought resistant lima bean.  For over 50 years, the lima bean was Ventura County’s main cash crop, with 75 percent of the world’s production coming from the county.   Lima bean bouquets even adorn the ornamental gates of original Ventura County courthouse, now Ventura’s City Hall.  By the late 1950’s consumer tastes changed, and the lima bean fell out of favor.   Lemons also grew well in the county, and by 1972 Ventura grew 50% of the California lemon crop   Today nearly 2,150 farms selling produce with an annual gross value of over than $2 billion help make agriculture the county’s second leading employer. Farming and farm related businesses provide roughly 43,000 jobs in Ventura County.  Berries, lemons and avocados are the leading crops today.

Ventura County is prone to both flooding and fires.  Storms in 1884 brought 40 inches of rain to Santa Paula and 70 inches to Ojai. The largest floods in Ventura county came in 1969, leaving 13 people dead, five bridges destroyed, and over 60 million dollars worth of property damage.  In 1928, engineering errors led to the collapse of the St. Francis Dam, sending a wall of water 10 stories high through the towns of Castaic, Saugus, Filmore, Santa Paula and Saticoy, killing 385 people, destroying 1,240 homes and flooding 7,900 acres. The dam’s collapse is considered the worst civil engineering failure of the 20th century.   In recent years, the 2017 Thomas Fire and the 2018 Woolsey Fire have also devastated the county.
