SAN PABLO, CALIFORNIA OVERVIEW

The city of San Pablo is in Contra Costa County, located in the San Francisco Bay area of Northern California. Over 31,000 people make their home in San Pablo.

Before Spanish and Mexican colonization, Ohlone natives lived between Wildcat and San Pablo Creeks, in the area currently known as San Pablo.   Sustained by the plentiful resources of the region, the native tribes gathered acorns, berries and roots, and hunted game, and made their homes from the tule reeds that lined the shore of the bay.

San Pablo like much of Contra Costa county, has its origins in the Mexican grant system. Nearly 18,000 acres of Rancho San Pablo were granted to Francisco María Castro, a former soldier at the San Francisco Presidio.  The rancho extended as far as San Pablo Bay.

After Castro died, one half of Rancho San Pablo went to his wife  and the other half went to his eleven children.  The heirs received undivided shares, with no fixed boundaries and the estate went  unsettled until 1894, when it was ultimately divided among 148 owners,

Juan Bautista Alvarado  the first native born governor of California, married one of Castro’s daughters.  They lived in the Alvarado Adobe, a replica of which stands in San Pablo today.

San Pablo Avenue, originally El Camino Real de la Contra Costa was the principal thoroughfare joining the East Bay ranches, and is one of the area’s oldest roads.

During the World War II era, the population of San Pablo grew dramatically from 2,000 to 25,000 people, lured by the prospect of jobs in the war industries

San Pablo was not  incorporated as a city until 1949.  In 1975 and again in 2014, the National Urban League named San Pablo  an “All-American City”
