ANGELS CAMP, CALIFORNIA OVERVIEW

Angels Camp is the only incorporated city in Calaveras County, in California’s Gold country.  The population of Angels Camp is estimated at 3,537.

Angels Camp is named for George and Henry Angell from Rhode Island. The shopkeepers started a trading post in the area during the 1949 Gold Rush.  During the early years of the Gold Rush, 4,000 placer miners camped in the from Angels Creek to Utica Park, an area of roughly one mile. Within a few short years, the placer gold was exhausted.

Angels Camp had both lode and placer mining.  After the placer deposits were exhausted,  Angels Camp became a center of lode, or hard rock mining, with gold extracted directly from the rocks beneath the ground.  The camp grew into a town.  By 1885 Angels Camp had become one of the major gold-mining districts in California. The mining of the Angels Camp vein lasted through 1910 with over 200 stamp mills producing around $20 million worth of gold. It was said that Angels Creek ran chalky white from the mill wastes. All of the major mines were shut down during the World War I era.

Angels Camp is home to the famous Angels Hotel where Samuel Clemens first heard the story of Jim Smiley and his famous jumping frog.  In 1865, Clemens (Pen name of Mark Twain) was in the area staying with his friend Jim Gillis who was working a claim.  Clemens immortalized the tale in his short story “The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County,” his first major success as a writer.   The Calaveras County Fair, the longest running county fair in California, features a Jumping Frog Jubilee, inspired by the story. The  Angels Hotel is still standing today and is the site of the “Frog Hop of Fame.”

Angels Camp’s proximity to the Sierras has made it a base camp for outdoor sports and activities.  Angels Camp was the proud home of United States Ski Team member and two time Alpine Skiing World Cup Downhill Champion, Kyle Rasmussen. Rasmussen competed in three Winter Olympics in the 1990s.

The Angels Camp Museum has one largest collections of carriages and wagons in the country, and includes 30,000 square feet of exhibits on Gold Rush mining history.  There are also exhibits on the local tribes, on Mark Twain, and on the ranching and agricultural heritage of the area.
