CONCORD CALIFORNIA OVERVIEW

Concord is in the eastern part of the San Francisco Bay area of northern California and is the largest city in Contra Costa County. Approximately 130,000 people make their home in Concord.  Originally named  Todos Santos  (All Saints) in 1869, the town was renamed Concord and was incorporated in 1905.

Before the European settlement the lands in the shadow of Mt. Diablo were the home to bands of  Bay Miwok Indians, hunter gatherers who were sustained by the acorns, roots, berries and plentiful game of the area.

The lands that are now known as Concord were part of the land grant to the Pacheco family. In 1835 Don Salvio Pacheco built a two-story adobe, the first building to be erected in Diablo Valley. It is still standing in downtown Concord, and is a California historical landmark.

The ranches and towns of the early Diablo Valley provided cattle, grain, lime and coal for the growing population of the Bay Area.

After a series of floods, fires and an earthquake devastated the town of Pacheco, a new town called “Todos Santos” was created nearby. Free lots were offered to the merchants and residents of Pacheco.  The town was officially recorded with Contra Costa County in 1869, but within months, the town was renamed Concord.  It was officially incorporated in 1905, with blacksmith Joseph Boyd as the first mayor.  Mount Diablo Union High School opened in 1901 and is now one of the longest continually operating high schools in California.

The Concord area played an important role in arming the Pacific theater during the World War II years.   The Concord Naval Weapons Station, established in 1942  was an armament storage and processing depot for the Department of Defense, operating on over 12,800 acres in two locations  north of Concord.  Although currently slated for re-developmnet, it had functioned throughout the Korean War, the Vietnam War and the Gulf War.

On July 17, 1944,  two merchant ships,  the SS Quinault Victory and SS E.A. Bryan were being loaded at Port Chicago with 4,600 tons of explosives, which accidentally detonated.  The resulting explosion damaged every building in Port Chicago.  The blasts were felt as far away as Nevada. 320 were killed instantly and 390 were injured.  Many of the dead and injured were African American sailors. It was the worst home front disaster of the war. Shortly afterwards,  similarly unsafe conditions led 258 sailors to refuse to load munitions at Port Chicago. They were accused of mutiny and court-martialed.  Fifty men were convicted and sentenced to 15 years of prison and hard labor in a trial that was widely reported as racist in nature.  Most were released in January 1946.

In 1994, a memorial was dedicated to the lives lost in the Port Chicago disaster. In 2019,  a resolution officially exonerating the 50 men court-martialed by the Navy was passed by Congress.
