ALAMEDA CALIFORNIA OVERVIEW

The city of Alameda was formally incorporated in 1853. The name in Spanish means “grove of poplar trees.”

Originally a peninsula, the island of Alameda was created in 1902 when the tidal canal was dredged, joining San Leandro Bay with the busy Oakland harbor.   Alameda’s Bay Farm Island was originally an island but is now connected by landfill to Oakland.  Alameda’s location and geography are ideal for the maritime industry.  In 1940, until its closure in 1997, Alameda was the site of a large naval air station.

Today, approximately 78,000 people make their home in Alameda.

Long before the Spanish arrived in California, thousands of Ohlone inhabited the coastal lands of Alameda, sustained by the mild climate and plentiful acorns, wild game and sea life.

In its early years, Alameda was a vacation destination for people living in San Francisco and the surrounding area. Widely considered the “Coney Island of the west,” the Neptune Beach amusement park drew visitors from 1917–1939.  It included a roller coaster, a hand carved carousel, carnival games, and pools.  Neptune Beach also hosted sporting events, including steeplechase and horse races, high-diving competitions, ballroom dancing championships and boxing matches.

The Alameda shipyard industry experienced dramatic growth during the World War I era.  The Alameda Works shipyard opened in 1916 at the site of the former United Engineering Works. At the beginning of World War II, the Alameda Works was modernized and expanded, and became the Bethlehem Alameda Shipyard.  At the height of the war, the shipyard covered over 80 acres, and employed 6,200 men and women.  Ten troopships were constructed and over 1,000 damaged vessels were repaired. The shipyard was closed in 1956.

In 1940, the Alameda Naval air station opened, employing 200 military and civilian personnel. Eventually, the air station included two 8,000 ft. runways, three seaplane ramps and a lighted seadrome.  The USS Ranger, USS Midway, USS Coral Sea and USS Hancock were all based in Alameda.  With 300 buildings and 30 miles of roads it remained an important naval base through the end of the Cold War.  The base was used for maintenance  until its closing in 1997.

Today, the World War II era aircraft carrier USS Hornet is maintained as a floating museum at Alameda Point.
