APPLE VALLEY, CALIFORNIA OVERVIEW

The town of Apple Valley, CA, lies at the southern edge of the Mojave Desert, in San Bernardino County. It is located about 89 miles from Los Angeles and about 45 miles from San Bernardino city. According to the 2022 census date, Apple Valley’s population is estimated at 75,867.  Although settled in the late 1800s, the town of Apple Valley was not incorporated as a town until November 28, 1988.

Many Native American tribes, including the Chemehuevi, Vanyume, Serrano and Paiute have lived and traveled through the Upper Narrows of the Mojave River. The Vanyume Indians lived along the Mojave River, including in the Apple Valley region. The Vanyume natives intermarried and spoke a dialect of the Serrano language, as a result they may be considered a branch of the Serrano tribes.

In November 2021, San Bernardino County acknowledged that its museums in Redlands, Apple Valley and Yucaipa Adobe sit on the Serrano people’s ancestral home.  For the first time the Serrano People and their written and spoken language were given a place of priority in the county museums.

Apple Valley is a town in Victor Valley. The neighboring cities are Hesperia and Victorville.  The current Metro area population of Victorville-Hesperia-Apple Valley in 2023 is 593,000, a 2.95% increase from 2022.

The Mojave River trail to and from the Colorado River and Southern California, runs through Apple Valley. It has been a historical path for Native Americans, the Spaniards in the 1700s, the Mexicans in the1800s, gold prospectors, trappers, and Mormon wagon trails in the 1850s.

In the late 1800s, the town was settled and the first cabin was built by Silas Cox and the first road was laid.  In 1885, the railroad came through the Cajon Pass to Victorville.  In the early 1900s, Apple Valley became famous for its apples and pears.  Max Ihmsen owned orchards and won awards for his fruit.  However, in the 1930s, certain events, including the outbreak of World War I, the Depression, rising cost of pumped water, fruit shipped into the state from Oregon/Washington, and a serious fungus infection in the orchards contributed to the demise of the apple/fruit orchards in Apple Valley.

In 1946, the Apple Valley Ranchos Land Company marketed Apple Valley as a residential community and resort.  Roy Rogers and Dale Evans made Apple Valley their home in 1965.  Since the 1930s’ Apple Valley has had a rich Western Heritage with guest ranches, that strived to support people with asthma, tuberculosis and even WWI shell-shocked Veterans.  Apple Valley was known for many nearby working Dude Ranches, where urban city dwellers could have an old fashion western adventure. Apple Valley was also known for major Rodeo competitions, including starting the First Intercollegiate Rodeo Competition in the country.
