BAKERSFIELD, CALIFORNIA OVERVIEW

Bakersfield is in Kern County and is the County seat.  It is located in Central California, in the San Joaquin Valley, and is approximately 110 miles from Los Angeles. According to the 2020 census, Bakersfield has over 400,000 residents making it the largest city in Kern County.

Bakersfield lies along the Kern River. The Native American Yokuts tribe, occupied the area now known as Bakersfield.  Yokuts can be seen throughout the Valley, including Yokuts Park in Bakersfield and Eagle Mountain Casino in Porterville, owned and operated by the Tule River Indian Tribe, of which a majority are Yokuts.  From 1842 through 1846, five Mexican land grants were established in the area later known as Kern County. On February 2, 1848, with the signing of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, Mexico surrendered California to the United States.

In 1851, settlers flocked to Bakersfield with the discovery of gold in the Kern River and adjacent area. Bakersfield was formally founded in 1869, by Colonel Thomas Baker who developed the design for the city. The discovery of the Kern River oil fields in 1877, established the petroleum industry in Bakersfield. In 1889, the city developed a wide-ranging irrigation system which became vital in the production of grain, cotton, flowers, alfalfa and livestock. In 1901, Standard Oil Company constructed the first oil pipeline in the County. The pipeline was completed in 1902 and extended from the north of Bakersfield to Point Richmond near the San Francisco Bay.

In 1943 the first aircraft factory was built in Bakersfield. Also, in 1943, Earl Warren, a former Bakersfield resident  became the Governor of California. He subsequently became the Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court. In 1949, the 41st President, George H. W.
