BANNING, CALIFORNIA OVERVIEW

Banning is a city located in Riverside County. Banning was named after Phineas Banning, who was a stagecoach line owner and the “Father of the Port of Los Angeles.”  Earlier, Banning was called Moore City, in honor of Ransom B. Moore, who operated a large cattle ranch and was later a member of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors.

Banning was incorporated in February 1913.  Its current population is about of 31,000 people.

Banning is situated in the San Gorgonio Pass, also known as Banning Pass, which is a gap on the rim of the Great Basin between the San Bernardino Mountains to the north and the San Jacinto Mountains to the south.  Banning is located east of the city of Riverside, adjacent to the San Bernardino National Forest and neighboring Cabazon and Beaumont.

The area of Banning was first inhabited by the Cahuilla and Serrano people, but it was also populated by the Gabrielino, Serrano, Luise’o, Chemehuevi, and Mojave tribes.

Banning development was instigated by the Colorado River Gold Rush. In 1862, the Bradshaw Trail passed through the area, a wagon road to the gold boomtowns of the State of Arizona. At that time, Gilman’s Ranch was used as a station for the stagecoach lines.

In 1876, the railroad passed through the Banning area. It commenced as the Southern Pacific Railroad, later purchased by Union Pacific Railroad, and they were a major contributor to the growth of the Banning area. Ten years after Banning’s incorporation, U.S. Route 99 was built, and after that the U.S. Route 60/70 in 1936, and subsequently Interstate 10.

Banning city counts with a few important education facilities including but not limited to: Banning High School, Cabazon Elementary, Central Elementary, Coombs Alternative Education, Hemmerling Elementary, Hoffer Elementary, New Horizons High (Independent Studies), Nicolet Middle and Mt. San Jacinto Community College.
