Beaumont Mesothelioma

Beaumont is a city in Riverside County, in Southern California.  Census data from 2022, estimates 56,349 residents in the city.  Beaumont is 11.6 miles from the city of San Bernardino, 27 miles from the city of Riverside, 36.4 miles from Anaheim, 56.2 miles from the city of Los Angeles, and 98.8 miles from San Diego, CA.

For thousands of years the Cahuilla people lived in southern California, including in the Beaumont area. The territory of the Cahuilla ranges from the area near the Salton Sea up into the San Bernardino Mountains and San Gorgonio Pass. The Cahuilla are generally divided into three groups: Desert Cahuilla, Mountain Cahuilla, and Western (or Pass) Cahuilla.  The Cahuilla shared tribal boundaries to the west, north, and southwest with the Gabrielino, Serrano, and Luiseño tribes.

There are nine federally-recognized Cahuilla reservations in Southern California: Agua Caliente, Augustine, Cahuilla, Cabazon, Los Coyotes, Morongo, Ramona, Santa Rosa, and Torres Martinez. The Soboba Band of Luiseño Indians is a federally-recognized tribe and home to the Luiseño and Cahuilla Native Americans.  The Soboba reservation is in the foothills of the San Jacinto Mountains near the city of San Jacinto, CA.

Early Native Americans lived and crossed over the San Gorgonio Pass thousands of years before European and American settlers discovered the San Gorgonio mountain pass. Beaumont at an elevation of 2500 to 3000 feet above sea level, and sits at the summit or peak of the San Gorgonio Pass. Beaumont is positioned between San Bernardino and Palm Springs California.

The San Gorgonio Pass lies between the San Bernardino Mountains and Mount San Gorgonio to the north and the San Jacinto Mountains and San Jacinto peak to the south.  The Gorgonio Pass is one of the deepest Mountain passes in the continental United States.  The Mountains surrounding either side of the pass rise almost 9000 feet above it.  In 1853, the United States Government’s Surveyor, Lt. Robert Stockton Williamson surveyed the San Gorgonio pass seeking a transcontinental railroad route to the Pacific Ocean.

In 1862, the first stagecoach lines utilized the San Gorgonio Pass. At the time William F. Edgar owned most of the land around Beaumont, resulting in the stagecoach station named Edgar Station.  In 1875, the Southern Pacific Railroad laid a line through the San Gorgonio pass and named the station Summit Southern Pacific Railroad Station.  In 1876, the first passenger train traveled through the Summit.

In 1884, George C. Egan bought parcels of land from the Southern Pacific railroad around Summit Station.  He built a store, a post office and plotted out the town of San Gorgonio.  In 1886, The Southern California Investment Company purchased Egan’s San Gorgonio town and renamed the town Beaumont.  Beaumont translates from French to beautiful mountain.  In 1907, Kenneth Smoot and Claredon B. Eyer bought land in Beaumont and began developing the land.  Beaumont was incorporated as a city on November 18, 1912.

Beaumont has six interchanges and connections to Interstate 10, State Routes 60 and 70, which provide access to roads in every direction in Southern California.  Beaumont encompasses strategic transportation routes that connects the greater Los Angeles area, and the Coachella Valley, along with routes to Arizona and across the country.  Further, given the housing boom in the early 2000s, Beaumont is one of the fastest growing cities in California. Beaumont is known for its open spaces and scenic landscapes.  It has 16 parks and recreational areas.
