BERKELEY, CALIFORNIA OVERVIEW

Berkeley is located in Alameda County, California and was named for philosopher George Berkeley, who wrote “Westward the course of empire takes it way.”  It is best known for the main University of California campus and for its role in the free speech movement and other campaigns for political awareness and social justice.  Berkeley lies along the eastern shore of San Francisco Bay, just north of Oakland and across the water from San Francisco and the famed Golden Gate Bridge.

Long before the Spanish arrived in California, thousands of native Ohlone inhabited the coastal lands near what is now called Berkeley, sustained by the mild climate and plentiful acorns, wild game and shellfish.

When the area was initially settled in 1853, it was given the name Ocean View. It was incorporated as Berkeley in 1878.

Like much of the San Francisco Bay Area,  Berkeley saw periods of rapid population growth during the Gold Rush, and following the 1906 earthquake, when refugees from San Francisco fled to the East Bay.

In 1873, the College of California moved from Oakland to Berkeley, and became what is known today as the University of California.

In 1923, a fire swept down the Berkeley hills, destroying 584 homes in the  neighborhoods north of the campus. Similar conditions led to the devastating 1991 Tunnel Fire, affecting parts of Berkeley and neighboring Oakland.

In addition to the University of California at Berkeley, other education institutions in Berkeley include the Graduate Theological Union, the Jesuit School of Theology, and the Pacific School of Religion. The research facilities of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory are also in Berkeley.  Berkeley hosts many museums, including the Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive, Lawrence Hall of Science, the Phoebe Hearst Museum of Anthropology, the Judah L. Magnes Museum, and the Habitot Children’s Museum.  Tilden Regional Park, with hiking trails, children’s farm, nature center, and botanical gardens rings the city.

Berkeley rose to national consciousness during the 1960’s, with the Free Speech movement, a campus-wide act of civil disobedience.  Berkeley activists also spawned the disability rights movement and the “slow foods”  movement,  emphasizing fresh, organic, and locally sourced foods. Berkeley remains an epicenter of social and environmental activism.

Today, Berkeley has a vibrant diverse culture both on campus and off, with fine multi-cultural restaurants,  live music and galleries. Berkeley is home to approximately 121,000 people.
