Blythe was named after a San Franciscan wealthy capitalist financier, Mr. Thomas Henry Blythe, who took the first steps in 1877 to establish primary water rights to the Colorado River in the region.  William/Oliver Calloway, was an engineer and a former captain of the 1st California Infantry Regiment, who interested Thomas Henry Blythe, to undertake together the development and settlement of an “empire” situated next to the Colorado River, where in 1928, the first automobile bridge over the Colorado River, was constructed by Blythe and Ehrenberg, in order to replace a cable ferry service.

The California Southern Railroad reached Blythe from the desert station of Rice, then known as Blythe Junction, was later renamed to honor G.W. Rice, who was an engineer and superintendent of the railroad.

A dramatic growth and production increase in the valley attracted national attention. The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway began leasing the line in 1921 and ended up acquiring it at the end of 1942.
