BRENTWOOD CALIFORNIA OVERVIEW

Brentwood is a located in Contra Costa County, in the San Francisco Bay Area of Northern California.  The United States 2022 Census Data estimates that its population is 66,127. Brentwood is 25 miles from Martinez, 46 miles from Richmond, 46 miles from Oakland  and 55 miles from San Francisco, CA.

Long before the Spanish arrived in California, thousands of Miwok  and Yokut native tribes. inhabited Northern California, including in Brentwood, CA.  Many native tribes were decimated by the Spanish mission system, European diseases and conflict with soldiers and settlers.

Brentwood sits on part of a 13,316 acre Mexican Land Grant, awarded to Jose Noriega which was named Rancho Los Meganos.  Jose Noriega’s Rancho ran from Bushy Peak above Byron to the San Joaquin River.  In 1837, Jose Noriega sold the Rancho to Dr. John Marsh.  Dr. Marsh utilized the land for cattle grazing and built the first house on the property.

Brentwood opened its first school in 1865, the (first) Brentwood Hotel in 1884 and the first church in 1885.  However, Brentwood was officially established as a town in 1878, when the San Pablo and Tulare Railroad opened a rail depot in the town.

From 1870 through 1910 Brentwood grew diverse agricultural products, including alfalfa, fruit, vegetables and nuts.  In 1910, Balfour, Guthrie & Co. purchased the John Marsh Rancho, the area was laid out and new businesses invested in the town, including the building of a new Brentwood Hotel in 1913, since the first Brentwood Hotel burned down on November 29, 1903.

By the late 1920s, Balfour, Guthrie & Co. operated the largest dry-yard and packing company in Brentwood and the H.P. Garin Company was shipping about 800 rail cars of fruits and vegetables throughout the country.

Brentwood incorporated as a city on January 21, 1948.  Brentwood’s population has grown exponentially through the years.  Due to its close proximity the San Francisco Bay Area, today Brentwood is known as a suburban bedroom community in the bay area.
