CARSON, CALIFORNIA OVERVIEW

Carson, is located in the South Bay area of Los Angeles County.  According to the 2022 U.S. Census, the estimated population is 92,388.  Carson is 18 miles from Los Angeles proper, 8.9 miles from Long Beach, 3.7 miles from Torrance, California.

The Indigenous residents living in the region for over 6000 years were the Suangna or Tongva Native Americans.  The Spaniards referred to the Native Americans as the Gabrielino Indians, named after the mission San Gabriel.  The Native Americans in Los Angeles County have also been referred to as the Gabrielino-Tongva Tribe.  Carson is located on the ancient Suangna Village where many archeological items such as tools and weapons have been found.

Carson was built on part of a 1784, Spanish land grant given to Juan José Dominguez, which was named Rancho San Pedro, but it was more commonly known as the Dominguez Rancho.

In the 1920s, drilling for oil began on Rancho San Pedro.  In the 1920s, various oil leases were granted to major companies, including, Shell Oil Company and Union Oil of California.  Numerous oil refineries, tank farms and industrial sites were developed in Carson. The discovery of oil increased jobs in the community and like most of California cities, Carson’s population expanded after World War II.

The city was named after George Henry Carson who married into the Dominguez family and supervised the family’s landholdings and ranching operations. The city was incorporated in 1968, and at that time, the voters formally named the town “Carson.”

Carson has a diverse and progressive population including a large number of Filipino-Americans. Carson has a state-of-the-art sports complex called Dignity Health Sports Park. The Sports Park has a soccer stadium used by the Los Angeles Galaxy, which signed David Beckham to the team in 2007.
