CHINO, CALIFORNIA OVERVIEW

The city of Chino is in Southern California, in San Bernardino County. It is 4.6 miles from Chino Hills, California, 5.8 miles from Ontario, 30.8 miles from San Bernardino city and 37.6 miles from Los Angeles. According to the United States Census Bureau 2022 data Chino’s population is estimated at 92,140 residents.

The indigenous people were the Tongva Indians who settled in the Chino region thousands of years before the Spanish Missionaries arrived. The Tongva Indians had a village called Wapijanga (also known as Wajija-nga) located in Chino Hills of Chino, California. In 1771, the Spanish Franciscan Friars established the mission of San Gabriel Archangel.  The Franciscan priests converted many Tongva natives and used their labor to build the missions, farm the land and shepherd the cattle and horses.  The Tongva Indians built great wealth for the Franciscan missions.

Chino is built on an 1841, Mexican land grant issued to Don Antonio Maria Lugo which was known as Rancho Santa Ana del Chino.  In 1881, Richard Gird purchased Rancho Santa Ana del Chino.  In 1887, Mr. Gird partitioned the land for ranches and charted the town of Chino.  The city of Chino was incorporated in 1910.

From the early 1900s through the 1980s, Chino was known for its dairy farming and agricultural economy, including orchards, crops of sugar beets, corn and alfalfa. In the 1970s, there was a move to develop suburban housing in the area and new manufacturing industries and businesses  were established. While maintaining its agricultural businesses, Chino now identifies as a suburban community, for the adjacent Los Angeles and Orange County communities.
