COSTA MESA, CALIFORNIA OVERVIEW

Costa Mesa, incorporated in 1953,  has a population 115,081. Costa Mesa is in Orange County, in Southern California, 37 miles south of Los Angeles and 88 miles north of San Diego. The name means “coastal plateau” in Spanish.   Once a largely rural area with an agricultural base,  Costa Mesa is now known as a vibrant and  lively “City of the Arts”, anchored by the internationally acclaimed Segerstrom Center for the Arts.   The city of Costa Mesa was incorporated in June 1953.

The earliest inhabitant of Costa Mesa settled on the plateau near the mouth of the Santa Ana River, in a village known as  Lukup, or Lukupangna.

In 1801, the Spanish Empire granted 62,500 acres to Jose Antonio Yorba as a reward for his years of military service.  Rancho Santiago de Santa Ana included the lands where the communities of Olive, Orange, Villa Park, Santa Ana, Tustin, Costa Mesa and Newport Beach stand today.  By 1880, settlers had begun buying portions of the rancho from Yorba’s heirs, and the town of Fairview was established. A flood in 1889 washed out the railroad servicing Fairview, and the town fell to ruin.

Within a few years, another town known as Harper was established, named after a nearby rancher.  Its first business, Ozment’s General Store contained the city’s first post office.  On May 11, 1920, Harper changed its name to Costa Mesa.  It was largely an agricultural community growing sweet potatoes, corn, tomatoes, strawberries, lima beans and apples.

In 1933 a magnitude 6.3 earthquake shook Costa Mesa and Orange County, killing 127 people and causing millions of dollars of damage to homes and businesses.

The population of Costa Mesa surged during the World War II years with the establishment of the 1,336 acre Santa Ana Air Base, a training center for Air Force personnel en route to the Pacific theater. The  base was decommissioned in 1946, and part of the land was annexed by Costa Mesa, eventually  becoming part of Orange Coast College, Costa Mesa High School and the Orange County Fairgrounds.

Today, Costa Mesa is a regional commercial, cultural and industrial center. The 3,000-seat Segerstrom Center for the Arts was built in 1985.  The Segerstrom Center hosts leading dance companies, Broadway shows, special events and many innovative year-round educational programs.  Segerstrom is home to the Pacific Symphony, the Philharmonic Society of Orange County and the Pacific Chorale, and it is Orange County’s largest non-profit arts organization.   On the grounds are a pedestrian Arts Plaza anchored by the 66 foot Richard Serra sculpture, “Connector.”
