Cupertino, California Overview

The 2022 census estimates 57,856 people reside in Cupertino, California.  Cupertino covers an area of 11.33 square miles in Santa Clara County.  It is 46 miles from San Francisco.  Cupertino has been transformed from its agrarian origins to a vital member of Silicon Valley.

The Tamien people were the indigenous inhabitants in the Cupertino area.  Their way of life was changed forever with the creation of Mission Santa Clara de Asis in 1777.  Mission Santa Clara was also home to Native people that spoke the Ohlone, Yokut and Miwok languages.

In 1776, Col. Juan Bautista de Anza’s expedition mapped Encampment Number 99, detailing a local creek. His cartographer Padre Pedro named the watercourse Arroyo San Joseph de Cupertino—loosely translated as the Creek of Saint Joseph of Cupertino.

The 1849, Gold Rush brought thousands of people from all over the world to the San Francisco Bay Area.  Cupertino and other nearby towns were a hub for the transportation of goods and supplies during the Gold Rush.  The Cupertino area was originally known as “Crossroads” because the town started around the crossroad of Stevens Creek Blvd. and Saratoga Mountainview Road.  In the 1800s, Cupertino was primarily agriculturally based producing prunes, plums, apricot and cherry orchards.  It also had a winery on Montebello Ridge.

In 1939, Henry J. Kaiser founded the Kaiser Permanente Cement Plant just west of Cupertino. Kaiser’s Cement Plant won the bid to provide 6 million barrels of cement for the construction of the Shasta Dam. Henry Kaiser also built Highway 101, Highway 85 and other major northern California landmarks from the quarry. Further, Southern Pacific Railroad transported Kaiser’s cement through Cupertino.

Like most of California, after World War II there was a population boom.  Agricultural land gave way to residential development. Cupertino incorporated as a city on October 10, 1955.  At the time Santa Clara Valley was known as the “Valley of Heart’s Delight” which eventually changed to Silicon Valley.

On April 1, 1976, Apple Inc. was founded by Steve Wozinak and Steve Jobs. Apple produced one of the first successful personal computers.  Apple Inc. and Hewlett-Packard (before HP moved to Palo Alto) were headquartered in Cupertino, California. In fact, the new worldwide headquarters for Apple Inc. is located in Cupertino. Today, Cupertino has many high-tech and AI companies, including Plus.ai, Appnomic, Mist Systems, and MySQL.
