DEL NORTE COUNTY, CALIFORNIA OVERVIEW

The County of Del Norte (locally pronounced “Del NORT”) is in the northwest corner of the California.  The name of this county means “the north.”  Del Norte borders the Pacific Ocean on its west coast and is immediately south of the Oregon border. It borders Siskiyou County on the east and Humboldt County to the south.

Del Norte County is an area of pristine natural beauty with agate studded beaches and towering ancient redwoods, dominated geologically by the Coastal Range and the Klamath mountains.

According to the 2010 census, the population of Del Norte county is 28,610.  It is ranked 49th of the 58 California counties by population. The lumber industry, fishing, crabbing, and tourism have historically been the main sources of income in Del Norte County.  Crescent City is the only incorporated city and is the county seat.

The indigenous inhabitants of Del Norte County are the Yurok (Klamath River Indians) and the Tolowa. The Tolowa were known for their redwood sea-going canoes, with some measuring 42 feet long and 8 feet wide. The Klamath River was the centerpiece of Yurok life, providing salmon, sturgeon, eel, and other fish.  It is estimated that by the end of the Gold Rush, 75% of the indigenous tribes died due to massacres and disease.

It is generally agreed that the first European American to explore this land was pioneer and trapper Jedidiah Smith in the mid-19th century.

Del Norte was established as a California county on March 2, 1857.

The motto of Del Norte County is “Where nature outnumbers people.”  The county’s Redwood National and State Parks are a unique state/federal partnership established in May 1994 to protect California’s old growth Redwood trees.  The parks combine Redwood National Park with Jebidiah Smith, Del Norte Coast, and Prairie Creek State Parks, preserving and protecting 133,000 acres of rugged coastline and wild rivers as well as 45 percent of California’s remaining old-growth redwoods.

The enduring man-made symbols of Del Norte County are the Battery Point Lighthouse and the St. George Reef Lighthouse.   Battery Point (also known as the Crescent City Light Station) has been an active lighthouse for over 160 years.

St. George Reef Lighthouse was completed in 1890 to guide mariners around the treacherous “Dragon rocks”, following the tragic wreck of the Brother Jonathan steamer. Over 200 lives were lost in what is still considered one of the worse maritime disasters on the Pacific Coast.

In the years following World War II, logging and lumber was the largest employer in Del Norte County, with 55 mills putting out 124 million board-feet per year.  There are no remaining sawmills operating in Del Norte County.

Crescent City is the largest city in Del Norte County, with a population of 7,643. The population includes inmates at the notorious Pelican Bay State Prison, a 275-acre super-max facility housing violent offenders.  Over 40 % of Pelican Bay’s inmates are serving life sentences.

The offshore topography of Crescent City makes it particularly susceptible to tsunami waves. Crescent City has experienced 34 tsunamis, more than any other community on the Pacific Coast.  On March 1, 1964 much of the city was destroyed by a series of tsunami waves generated by a 9.2-magnitude earthquake near Anchorage, Alaska. The 21-foot wall of water killed 12 people and caused an estimated $15 million in damage to Crescent City. In the years since the disaster, Crescent City has become the only city in California currently designated “Tsunami Ready” by the National Weather Service.   There is a siren-based tsunami warning that is regularly tested. There are tsunami evacuation routes and maps.
