The Indigenous residents of the area were the Tongva Native Americans.  The Tongva People inhabited approximately a 4000 mile territory in the Greater Los Angeles area. In 1771, Father Junipero Serra founded the San Gabriel Archangel Mission in the Los Angeles area.  Father Junipero Serra referred to the Native Americans as the Gabrielino Indians.  They have also been referred to as the Gabrielino-Tongva Tribe.  The San Gabriel Mission used Indian labor and became wealthy, with orchards, vineyards and herds.

Downey, a former California Governor.  In 1873, the Southern Pacific Railroad established a rail line in the area which brought prosperity to the town.  In the early 1900s, Downey became an agricultural town, with fruit orchards, orange groves, grain, corn and dairy farms.

During World War II, Vultee Aircraft Corporation (Convair) produced Vultee Vengeance bombers for the British Air Force and produced a large portion of military aircraft for the United States.  Vultee was purchased and merged into various companies, including Lockheed, McDonald Douglas, Gen. Dynamics and Boeing.

Downey was the birthplace of the Apollo Space Program, the shuttle, the Saturn V Booster rockets and the lunar-landing modules, but Rockwell NASA ultimately closed the Downey facility in 1999.

Downey is a residential community adjacent to the greater Los Angeles metropolitan area.  It has 21 parks and recreational facilities available all year.
