EL CAJON, CALIFORNIA OVERVIEW

El Cajon is a lovely city in Southern California, in San Diego County.  The 2021, U.S. Census Bureau indicates that El Cajon’s population is 105,432.  El Cajon is 15.8 miles from the city of San Diego, 17 miles from the Pacific Ocean, 126.7 miles from Los Angeles and 20 miles from the U.S.-Mexican border.   El Cajon was incorporated in 1912.

El Cajon and San Diego County are the native home of the Kumeyaay people, that generally encompass the Diegueno, Tapai, Ipai and other tribes.  Mission San Diego de Alcala was founded in 1769.  The Missions used the local Indians to raise cattle, and grow crops, including grapes and barley.

The name El Cajon, translates to “large box.”  It currently is situated on part of the old El Cajon Rancho.  In the 1900s, it was primarily an agricultural community and known for grapes, avocados, orange and lemon groves.

The Gillespie Air field located in El Cajon played an important part in World War II and is the oldest airfield in San Diego County.  In 1944, the Marine Corps established the Marine Corps Auxiliary Air Field-Gillespie as a parachute training base for the military campaign in WWII.  Gillespie Air Field shut down in 1944.  At the end of 1946, San Diego County leased the airport for public use and finally obtained the rights to the airport from the Federal Government in 1952.

Today, the Gillespie  Airport employs over 3000 people.  The Gillespie Air field is home to flight schools, maintenance and repair facilities; and also hosts the San Diego Aerospace Museum in an annex which displays historical military jets and modern aircraft.

As in most of California, El Cajon’s population increased dramatically after WWII, and now is a large city with over 100,000 residents.  El Cajon has a diverse populace, including a large Arab and Chaldean Iraqi population that flourishes and supports the economy with restaurants, stores and other businesses in the area.
