El CERRITO CALIFORNIA OVERVIEW

El Cerrito is in Contra Costa County on the east side of San Francisco Bay.  It has a population of approximately 24,000 people.

German blacksmith and businessman Wilhelm F. Rust came to California in 1883. He leased property, built a blacksmith shop and later a hardware store in Contra Costa County in the area that was to become El Cerrito.   Rust was the first postmaster in village.

A town began to grow along San Pablo Ave, and it was widely referred to as “Rust”. Refugees fleeing from the 1906 earthquake and fire flocked to the East bay, and the little town grew.  In 1917, with a population of 1500 it was incorporated as a city and called El Cerrito (Spanish for Little Hill, perhaps referring to the hill in the adjacent city of Albany. ) El Cerrito had a rough and tumble reputation in its early years, with 20 saloons lining San Pablo Ave, its main commercial area.

The El Cerrito hill face was scarred by 2 “blueschist” quarries, the Bates & Borland Company quarry at the top of the hills, and the Hutchinson Quarry, lower down.  The quarries operated until the 1940’s.  Today, the property of the Bates and Borland Quarry is part of Camp Herms,  owned and operated  by the Boy Scouts of America. Thousands of Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts still use the facility for camping and summer programs.

During the World War II years, the population of the entire Bay Area experienced rapid growth, including El Cerrito.  The population of El Cerrito soared to 16,624. Today, El Cerrito has a population of 24,000. Its hosts two Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) stops, El Cerrito Plaza, and El Cerrito Del Norte. Its proximity to the University of California at Berkeley makes it popular for students living off campus.

Modern El Cerrito is primarily a “city of homes” and nondescript strip malls, but its history was slightly more colorful.  A local character  “Black Jack” Jerome ran a greyhound  racing track at what is now El Cerrito Plaza.  The track was shut down for illegal gambling in 1939 by the state Attorney General,  Earl Warren.   Creedence Clearwater Revival band members John and Tom Fogerty grew up in El Cerrito.
