FOUNTAIN VALLEY, CALIFORNIA OVERVIEW

Fountain Valley, is in Orange County, California and its neighbors include, Westminster, Costa Mesa, Huntington Beach and Santa Ana. Fountain Valley is 22.7 miles from Long Beach, and 34.4 miles from Los Angeles.  The 2022 United States Census Bureau estimates Fountain Valley’s population at 55,930.

Orange County was home to the Tongva, Juaneno, and Luiseno Native Americans who lived in the area for thousands of years, before Gasper de Portola’s 1769, Spanish expedition. Fountain Valley lies on part of the Mexican’s Rancho Las Bolsas Land Grant, formerly known as Rancho Los Nietos. In 1848, all of California was ceded to the United States pursuant to the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo.

In the late 1800s, Fountain Valley was mostly Swamp land.  In 1896, the Talbert family purchased 300 acres of swamp land and built a General Store which ultimately became Fountain Valley.  The town was originally called Talbert.  The town and the surrounding area was also known as Gospel Swamp because Evangelical type preachers would hold revival meetings in Talbert and in the nearby towns of Costa Mesa, Huntington Beach and other small towns.  However, a severe drought in 1870, dried out the swamp resulting in fertile agricultural land.

During the 1800s, Fountain Valley’s economy was agriculturally based and grew diverse crops, including sugar beets, chili peppers, celery, and citrus.  In the 1930’s Fountain Valley produced strawberries, cabbage, onions, tomatoes, corn, squash and other vegetables and fruit.

In 1957, the town’s residents voted to incorporate as a city.  On June 13, 1957, the town was incorporated and the residents named the new city Fountain Valley.  It was named after the natural springs and wells in the area that advanced the town’s agricultural success.

Given its proximity to Los Angeles, Fountain Valley had a population boom in the 1960 and 1970s.  The farmland gave way to residential development.  However, Fountain Valley’s city government adopted a Master Plan before any development began.  Fountain Valley has been referred to as Orange County’s best-planned community.  Fountain Valley’s Master Plan allowed for the balanced growth of homeowners association and the development of Ranch, Spanish-style and brick-fronted Traditional homes and business districts.

From the early 1900s, Fountain Valley has had a diverse Asian community, including a prominent Japanese farming community.  The Wintersburg Japanese Mission, the Japanese Presbyterian Church and Hall and Japanese farms were established in the early1920s, in and around Fountain Valley.  Shuji Kanno bought land and grew crops in the area in the 1900s.  Many Japanese farmers returned to Fountain Valley, after their WWII interment.  In 1957, James Kanno became the first Nisei mayor in the continental United States and the first mayor of Fountain Valley.  Also, during the 1970s and 1980s, many Vietnamese refugees arrived in Fountain Valley and the surrounding cities.  The 2020 Census indicates that Fountain Valley has a 37.4% Asian population.

Today, Fountain Valley has a diverse and multi-cultural population.  It is a suburban community with commuter access to Los Angeles and nearby cities for employment in various jobs, including technology and industrial companies.
