GARDENA, CALIFORNIA OVERVIEW

Gardena, is located in the South Bay area of Los Angeles County.  According to the 2022 U.S. Census, the estimated population is 58,843.  Gardena is 15 miles from Los Angeles proper, 14 miles from Long Beach, 5 miles from Torrance, California.

The Indigenous residents living in the region for over 6000 years were the Tongva Native Americans.  The Spaniards referred to the Native Americans as the Gabrielino Indians, named after the mission San Gabriel.  The Native Americans in Los Angeles County have also been referred to as the Gabrielino-Tongva Tribe.

Gardena is 5.9 square miles.  It was built on part of a 43,000 acre Spanish land grant given to Juan José Dominguez in 1874, which was named Rancho San Pedro.  The Ranch was later named Rosecrans Ranchos after William Starke Rosecrans, a Major General in the Union Army purchased 16,000 acres in 1869.

From 1886-1887, Gardena grew after Los Angeles enormous real-estate expansion and the Rosecrans Rapid Transit Railway linking Los Angeles and Rosecrans in 1887.  While the Rosecran Rapid Transit Railway line lasted only one year it was purchased by the Redondo Railway.  On April 11, 1890, the Redondo Railway began travel on its newly developed line between Los Angeles and Redondo that commenced near Vermont St.. Accordingly, Gardena moved its downtown area from Figueroa St. to Vermont St.

In the 1900s Gardena was a farming community and known as “Berryland” for its year round production of strawberries, raspberries and blackberries.  It also grew tomatoes, alfalfa and barley.  Indeed, the early twentieth century was a time of railroad growth in and around Gardena which made the area flourish and the population grow.  Today, the city relies on bus service and has easy access to every major Los Angeles Freeway, including the I-405, I-105, I-710, I-110 and California State Highway 91.  The only trains passing through Gardena now are freight trains.

Currently, Gardena is a residential and industrial city.  It has a diverse, progressive and active population.  It has a history of a large concentration of Japanese-Americans residents.  The Moneta Japanese Institute was founded in 1911.  The Gardena Japanese School was founded in 1916, but the school dissolved due to the United States military internment of Japanese citizens in 1942.  However, many Japanese-American residents returned to Gardena after World War II.

Kiyoto Ken Nakaoka was elected as Gardena’s mayor in 1972.  He was the first Japanese-American mayor elected in California and in the United States. Mr. Nakaoka is credited with the establishment of many Japanese companies in Gardena, including Nissen Foods, Marukai Corporation and Nissan’s North America headquarters until Nissan relocated to Tennessee in 2006.
