HACIENDA HEIGHTS, CALIFORNIA OVERVIEW

Hacienda Heights, is located in the San Gabriel Valley in Southern California, in Los Angeles County.  According to the U.S. Census, the 2020, the population was 54,191.  Hacienda Heights is 20.6 miles from Los Angeles, 31.2 miles from Long Beach and 34.2 miles from Torrance, California.  Hacienda Heights is an unincorporated area in Los Angeles County and is a Census Designated Place (CDP).  Hacienda Heights is 11.182 square miles and is the second largest CDP area in Los Angeles County.

The Indigenous residents of the area were the Tongva Native Americans.  They have also been referred to as the Gabrielino-Tongva Tribe.  The Tongva People inhabited approximately a 4000 mile territory in the Greater Los Angeles area. The San Gabriel Arcangel Mission used Indian labor and became wealthy, with orchards, vineyards and herds.

Hacienda Heights sits on part of the 48,790 acre, Rancho La Puente, Mexican land grant awarded to John Rowland and William Workman in 1845.  Under Spain’s regime in the early 1800s, Rancho La Puente formerly belonged to the nearby Mission San Gabriel Arcangel.

Rowland and Workman built adobe homes and used the land for ranching.  In 1912, Baldwin’s heirs sold the property to Edin Hart and Jet Torrance who subdivided the land for settlement and named the subdivision North Whittier Heights.  The area was primarily agricultural and grew avocados, citrus and walnuts.  The area attracted numerous settlers during the Gold Rush in the 1840s.

After World War II, Hacienda Heights and the surrounding area experienced a population boom.    In the 1960s and the 1970s, the agricultural fields gave way to residential development.  Today, Hacienda Heights is a diverse suburban community.  About 69% of Hacienda Heights is residential and about 24% of the area is designated as open space.  Hacienda Heights has six local parks.  In 1961, the area known as North Whittier Heights was renamed Hacienda Heights.

In 2003, a measure was put before the voters in the Hacienda Heights area on whether the community should incorporate as a city.  The measure failed resoundingly by nearly a 2-1 margin.  Hacienda Heights is also home to the Hsi Lai Temple one of the largest Buddhist temples in the United States.
