Hemet California Mesothelioma

HEMET, CALIFORNIA OVERVIEW

Hemet is a city in Riverside county, in the San Jacinto Valley in Southern California.  Census data from 2022 estimates 90,689 residents in the city.  Hemet is 23.7 miles from Moreno Valley, 30.9 miles from Temecula, 33.9 miles from Riverside, 84.1 miles from San Diego, and 87.1 miles from Los Angeles, CA.

Hemet is situated on an ancient Pochea Indian Village site.  On March 29, 1933, the Pochea Village location was acknowledged and designated as a California historic landmark. Also the Cahuilla Indians lived nearby Hemet, in the desert plains and canyons south of the San Bernardino and San Jacinto mountains.  Many Indian artifacts, including tools, pottery and rock art have been found in Riverside County and in the surrounding area.

Mission San Luis Rey de Francia was founded by the Spaniards in 1798. Mission San Luis Rey used the area around Hemet as a cattle ranch which was called Rancho San Jacinto.  After Mexico’s independence from Spain, the Mexican government  broke up the Missions and in 1842, awarded Jose Antonio Estudillo a land grant called Rancho San Jacinto Viejo consisting of 35,500 acres.  Other Estudillo family members also received land grants providing the Estudillo family with control of over 110,000 acres in the area.

In the late 1860’s, the Estudillo family began selling portions of their land to Americans. In 1887, several Americans including, W.F. Whittier and E.L. Mayberry created the Lake Hemet Water Co. and the Lake Hemet Land Co. and established plots for a town.  In 1893, they named the town Hemet.  From 1891 to 1895, the Lake Hemet Water Co., also built the great Hemet Dam, delivering a dependable water source to the San Jacinto Valley which included Hemet.  Although, Hemet was founded in 1887 it was not incorporated as a city until 1910.

Since 1923, the outdoor Ramona pageant has continuously been performed at the Ramona amphitheater in Hemet. In 2023, the Ramona Pageant will celebrate 100 years of continuous annual performances. Hemet still maintains a rural character and is a suburban community within proximity to many other cities for employment opportunities

Taking into account its exclusionary past, Hemet today has a racial and culturally diverse population. According to the 2022 US Census statistics, Hemet’s population includes many different races including, 63% white, 9.1% African-American, 2.5% Asian and 49.3% Latino.
