HUNTINGTON PARK, CALIFORNIA OVERVIEW

Huntington Park is a city located in South Central Los Angeles County.  The 2022 Census estimated the population at 52,633.  Huntington Park is 6 miles from Los Angeles, 17 miles from Torrance, 19 miles from Long Beach, California.  Huntington Park is a residential and industrial suburb near Los Angeles.

The Indigenous residents living in the Huntington Park area were the Gabrielino-Tongva Native Americans.  The Tongva tribes inhabited approximately a 4000 mile territory in the Los Angeles basin, including the coastal area, present-day Los Angeles, Orange County and portions of San Bernardino County.  In 1771, the Spaniards labeled the Tongva Native Americans as the Gabrielino Indians.  The Tongva people traded their goods beyond their territory, including with the San Joaquin Valley Yokuts and the Southern Kumeyaay tribe.

Huntington Park sits on part of the old Rancho San Antonio Mexican Land Grant awarded to Antonio Maria Lugo in 1809.  Rancho San Antonio eventually was sold to new settlers in the area.  In 1902, the town granted industrialist Henry Huntington a right of way to develop the Pacific Electric Railway line into the town.

Huntington Park was incorporated in 1906, and named after Henry Huntington.  With the new Pacific Electric Railway line Huntington Park developed into an accessible suburb for the city of Los Angeles. Also, Pacific Boulevard  became an active commercial center and a retail area for Southeast Los Angeles County.  Pacific Boulevard is also the location for the cities’ festivals, parades and the annual Carnival Primavera celebration.

Huntington Park is considered a Gateway City.  It is bordered by the cities of Bell, Cudahy, Los Angeles, Maywood and Vernon.  It is also surrounded by unincorporated areas, including, Florence-Graham and Walnut Park.

Huntington Park has a tumultuous racial past.  It was a primarily white community that fought segregation in the 1950s, to preserve the city as an all-white enclave.  In the 1970s, Huntington Park’s white population moved to Orange County, the San Fernando Valley and the San Gabriel Valley. Given its proximity to Los Angeles, Huntington Park has also experienced racial discord with the nearby Watts Riot in 1965, and the Rodney King riots in 1991.

Huntington Park has transformed itself and is a flourishing Latino community that operates as a major retail center for southeastern Los Angeles.  The 2020 Census confirms Huntington Park’s population is 97 percent Latino.  It has a diverse work marketplace with factories, retail venues, manufacturing hubs and an industrial center.
