INDIO, CALIFORNIA OVERVIEW

Indio city was incorporated on May 16, 1930,  and it’s located in the Coachella Valley of Southern California’s Colorado Desert region. It has a population of 91,240, approximately, and is the 88th most populated city in the state of California, United States. Its northern border reaches Norco and Riverside, on the western border reaches Irvine, on the eastern border reaches Palm Springs and the city of Murrieta on the southern border.

Indio is a city located in the Riverside County and in the 1970s, a Chamber of Commerce slogan used to formerly referred to as the Hub of the Valley. Due to the numerous cultural events held in the city of Indio, it is recognized as the City of Festivals, the most notably festival is the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival.

Indio is the Spanish word for Indian and at the beginning in history, the would-be city was actually called Indian Wells.

The area of Indio City was first inhabited by the Cahuilla and Serrano people, but it was also populated by the Gabrielino, Serrano, Luise’o, Chemehuevi, and Mojave tribes, including, the urban Indians who moved here in the 20th century, as well. Cahuilla natives used tin as a tribal medicine, therefore an indian guide engaged by a local frontiersman and led him to Cajalco Hill as the source of it.

In 1873, Southern Pacific Railroad began the Railroad line construction east out of Los Angeles and the trains were operated to Colton and Indio (then Indian Wells), in 1875 and 1876, accordingly, reaching also the west bank of the Colorado River opposite Yuma (a village known as Arizona City prior to 1873) and continued building eastward.

Basically, the City of Indio was needed as a halfway point for the Southern Pacific Railroad between Yuma, Arizona and Los Angeles, since the train engines needed to be refilled with water. Once the railroad’s arrival in 1876, Indio really started to grow and the first permanent building was the craftsman-style Southern Pacific Depot station and hotel, built for the Southern Pacific’s workers to make their life as comfortable as it could be.

The Southern Pacific railroad has a history of being solicited to appear at Court several times, due to the use of asbestos-containing chemicals and materials in their workplaces that causes asbestos-related diseases for their employees when exposed, or for their employees’ spouses and family members.

Indio was also acknowledged for its agricultural activities. Onions, cotton, grapes, citrus and dates were a few of the produces that thrived in the arid climate. At first, water was attained through artesian wells due to the ingenuity of farmers and later through the valley’s branch of the All-American Canal. Although, water also was a major problem for Indio and the city was flooded several times until the storm water canals were created throughout the Coachella Valley.

Indio’s ideal climate and the Coachella Valley is influenced by the surrounding geography. High mountain ranges on three sides contribute to its unique and year-round warm climate, with some of warmest winters in southern California, also combined with exceptional conditions for growing various crops and an ample supply of ground water, allows agriculture to remain the second largest industry in the Coachella Valley.
