IRVINE, CALIFORNIA OVERVIEW

Incorporated in 1971, 283,000 people make their home in Irvine, a city in Orange County, California.  In 2019, Irvine made Money Magazines “Best Places to live” in the United States list, citing the 278 sunny days per year,  the expanding economy and low unemployment rate.    With its low crime rate, Irvine is also considered one of the country’s safest cities.

Many companies have corporate offices in Irvine, including Allegan, Mazda, Samsung, Toshiba, Kia, and Asics America Corporation.

The city of Irvine is named for the Irvine family. James Irvine was born in Ireland and came to America following the failure of Ireland potato crop and subsequent “potato famine.”  Arriving in California for the Gold Rush he worked as a miner and a merchant.  Irvine became a silent partner in the sheep flocks of brothers Thomas and Benjamin Flint, and their cousin Llewellyn Bixby.

Irvine has its origin in the ranch founded by James Irvine, the Flint brothers, and Bixby. The ranch was created from three adjoining Mexican land grants- Rancho Santiago de Santa Ana, Rancho San Joaquin and Rancho Lomas de Santiago. The holdings eventually spanned over 120,000 acres and were largely used to graze sheep.   In 1878, James Irvine bought out his partners for $150,000, creating the Irvine Ranch, stretching 23 miles from the Santa Ana River to the Pacific Ocean.

After the death of James Irvine in 1886, his son, James Irvine II, inherited the ranch.  The ranch holdings were incorporated into The Irvine Company and the lands were gradually converted to agriculture. By 1918, 60,000 acres of drought resistant lima beans were grown..By 1930, the ranch was also growing oranges, cauliflower, grapes, barley, and papayas.  Today, the Irvine Ranch Historic Park includes 24 original ranch buildings including bunkhouses, a mess hall and a replica of the 1876 Irvine family home.

During World War II, The Irvine Company sold the government land to be used as Marine Corps training  facilities.  After the war the Irvine Company leased some of the buildings to the Boy Scouts. Today the area is part of Irvine Regional Park.

James Irvine II died in 1947 at the age of 80. His son, James Irvine III had died earlier from tuberculosis.  Leadership of the company fell to his surviving son Myford, who began opening the ranch to urban development.  Myford died in 1959.

In 1957, the Irvine Co. sold 1,000 acres to the University of California for $1, and the University of California at Irvine was created.  500 acres were subsequently added. A master plan for a city surrounding the university was created by the university’s architect, William Pereira, and Irvine Company developers.  The area included industrial zones, residential neighborhoods and open spaces with trails and parks. One of the most famous architects of the era, Pereira also designed the campuses of the University of Southern California and Pepperdine University.

At over than 65 square miles Irvine is still one of the nation’s largest planned urban communities.
