LA HABRA, CALIFORNIA OVERVIEW

La Habra is located in Southern California, in Orange County.  It is about 8 miles from Anaheim, 25 miles from Los Angeles and 26 miles from Long Beach, CA.  According to the 2022 U.S. Census Data, an estimated 61,978 people make their home in La Habra.  La Habra was incorporated as a city on January 20, 1925.

The indigenous Acjachemen (also known as Juaneno), Tongva (also known as Gabrielino) and Payomkawichum (also known as Luiseno) Tribes all lived in Southern CA, for thousands of years before the Spaniards’ 1769 expedition.  These Tribes lived in southern Los Angeles County, Orange County and Northern San Diego County.   Many California Native Tribes were decimated by the Spanish Mission System, European diseases, conflict with settlers and soldiers and forced removal to reservations or rancherias.  In fact, the City of La Habra sits on part of the original San Gabriel Mission.

In 1821, Mexico gained its independence from Spain and eventually distributed the former Mission land to private owners.  In 1839, a 6,698 acre land grant was awarded to Mariano Reyes Roldan, and he named it Rancho Canada de La Habra.  Although the land grant passed though different people, ultimately the City of La Habra lies on part of Rancho Canada de La Habra. La Habra is situated in the furthest northwestern corner of Orange County and borders Los Angeles County.

Willits J. Hole, purchased the land grant in 1894 and sold lots for development.  La Habra became a town in 1896, contemporaneously with the opening of a United States Post office.  Its economy was agriculturally based with ranching, citrus groves and the development in 1920 of the Hass avocado. In the late 1920s, La Habra was known as the largest avocado center in California.

Settlers arrived in La Habra in 1890, including the Milhous family, former President Richard Nixon’s grandparents.  In 1938, Richard Nixon opened a law office in La Habra.  Many workers flocked to La Habra in the early 1900s to work in agriculture, the Sunkist Packing House, and the Murphy-Coyotes oil fields of the Standard Oil Company.  La Habra has prospered through the years but today is primarily recognized as a suburban residential community of the Greater Los Angeles Area.
