LA MESA, CALIFORNIA OVERVIEW

La Mesa is a city in Southern California, in San Diego County.  The 2023, U.S. Census Bureau estimates that La Mesa’s population is 60,360.  La Mesa is 10 miles from the city of San Diego, 14 miles from the Pacific Ocean, 123 miles from Los Angeles and 23 miles from the U.S.-Mexican border.

La Mesa and San Diego County are home to the Kumeyaay people.  The Kumeyaay people generally include the Diegueno, Tapai, Ipai and other tribes.  When the Spaniards arrived in 1769 there were nearly 20,000 Kumeyaay natives living in San Diego County. Mission San Diego de Alcala was founded in 1769.  The Missions used the local Indians to raise cattle, and grow crops, including grapes and barley.

The name La Mesa translates from Spanish into “the table.”  La Mesa was developed on parts of the 1769, Mission San Diego de Alcala and on part of the old Rancho El Cajon.  After the Mexican-American war the Rancho El Cajon’s heirs filed their land grant claim with the Public Land Commission in 1852, which was confirmed and patented in 1876.

Although La Mesa was incorporated as a city on February 16, 1912, it was established as a town as early as 1869. In the 1800s, La Mesa Springs was known for its agricultural roots with citrus farmers, ranchers and land for cattle grazing.  There was a land boom in 1885, when the railroad built a depot in San Diego. In 1887, the San Diego Flume Co. purchased John Harbison’s land and filed a subdivision map naming the area La Mesa Colony. In 1894, A.S. Crowder and Joseph Allison filed the La Mesa Springs subdivision map. In the 1800s, streets were paved, homes and stores were built.

La Mesa was transformed in the early 1900s when Sherman Grable purchased 100 acres from David Collier. Sherman Grable and Charles Park formed the Park-Grable Investment Company. They developed 1000 lots in central La Mesa. In 1902, Colonel Ed Fletcher and William Gross purchased the Villa Caro Ranch which included the summit of Mount Helix.

In 1923, Mary Yawkey White asked Colonel Fletcher if he would sell the summit of Mount Helix to her so that she could create a memorial to her mother, Mary Carpenter Yawkey.  The result was the Mt. Helix Park which has a large outdoor Amphitheatre and a 35-foot-tall cross on the mountain’s peak.  In 1925, the first Easter sunrise mass was held on Mt. Helix and it is now considered the second oldest continuous Easter sunrise service in the country.

Like most California cities, after World War II there was a population surge in La Mesa and agricultural land gave way and to residential development. Today, La Mesa is a suburban urban community with access to major transportation routes, including Highway 125 and Interstate 8. La Mesa is set in a picturesque area with Mt. Helix and Mt. Nebo surrounding the city.
