LODI, CALIFORNIA OVERVIEW

Lodi is in California’s Central Valley, in San Joaquin County.  It is agriculturally based and known for the Flame Tokay grapes brought to the Valley in 1857.  Lodi is 16.4 miles from Stockton, 35.7 miles from Sacramento and 84.6 miles from San Francisco.  Lodi was incorporated as a city over 116 years ago on December 6, 1906.  The 2022, United States Census Data estimates Lodi’s population as 67,258.

The Haggin’s Native American Gallery reports that when the Spanish missionaries entered California in 1769, they found an estimated Native American population of more than 300,000, with 100 indigenous tribes speaking 125 languages or dialects. The  North Valley Yokuts and South Plains Miwok tribes both lived in San Joaquin County.

The Miwok’s diet were acorns, nuts, mushrooms, roots and berries.  Archeologists have found several native villages, including a village on the Mokelumne River.  Like most native tribes the Miwok were decimated by the Spanish Mission system, forced labor, disease, conflict and alcohol.  The survivors were forced from their land onto reservations or rancherias.  Today, there is a Miwok Tribal Council located in Stockton, CA.

Lodi California sits along the Mokelumne River in the San Joaquin Valley.  The area was settled in 1869, when the Central Pacific Railroad established a depot in the center of town.  A settlement was drawn, settlers purchased plots and the town was originally named Mokelumne City.  Given the confusion with  the community of Mokelumne Hill and Mokelumne Station, the town citizens requested a name change.  On March 21, 1874, the California State Assembly (Bill 639) officially changed Mokelumne town’s name to Lodi.

Like nearby Stockton, Lodi had a deep water port and shipped goods and passengers from and to San Francisco year round.  In the early years, Lodi’s economy was based on lumber, agriculture, cattle and dairy ranches.  In 1880, San Joaquin County produced 3.4 million bushels of wheat, with most of it grown in Lodi.  In 1876, the Lodi Flouring Mill could produce 200 barrels of Flour a day.  In the 1880s, Lodi was known as the Watermelon Capitol of the World.  In 1886, Lodi produced 3,000 rail cars of watermelon—without any irrigation.  In the 1890s, Lodi shifted to grapes.  In 1899 Lodi claimed 2,346,061 grapevines.  Lodi had vintage Tokay vineyards and with the help of U.C. Davis Lodi is now known for the development of the seedless Flame Tokay grape.

In 1991, Lodi had the forethought to establish  the Lodi Winegrape Commission that focused on education, research and marketing of their winegrapes.  In 1992, Lodi Vintners developed a grape Integrated Pest Management Program which became known as the Lodi Rules.  The Lodi Rules are a set of over 150 farming standard practices which help farmers manage their vineyards sustainably.  They are divided into six categories: ecosystem management, water management, soil management, pest management, business management, and human resources.  In 2014, the Lodi Rules Sustainability Program was given the Governor’s Environmental and Economic Leadership Award.
