In 1810, Antonio Maria Lugo was awarded 11 square leagues (which is about 29,513 acres) of land by the Spanish King.  Lugo named the area Rancho San Antonio.  After Mexico’s independence from Spain, Juan Alvarado, the Mexican Governor of California upheld Lugo’s land grant in 1838.  Lugo received a patent from the United States government on July 24, 1847, which confirmed title to his land grant.  Lynwood which is 4.84 square miles and many other towns surrounding Lynwood were built on the old Rancho San Antonio.

Lynwood was named after the Lynwood Dairy and Creamery. Lynwood was incorporated as a city on July 16, 1921.  Like most of California there was a population boon after World War II, when many military and civilian families sought housing in the Los Angeles basin, including in Lynwood.
