The Spanish word for wood, “Madera” originally sat in Fresno County.  The County was created by the California Lumber Company in 1893.  The lumber company’s creation of a flume, which allowed logs to come down from the mountainous areas, and its intersection with the railroad created the need for this new city and county.  Lumber remained the county’s lifeline until 1933 when logging and the lumber industry ceased.  Soon after, the areas agriculture filled in the gap for jobs and money. This farming economy still stands today.
