Manteca is in California’s Central Valley, in San Joaquin County.  Archaeologist have determined that the Yokut Indians, were the initial inhabitants in the Manteca and surrounding area.  The archaeologist found that the Yokuts were in the area 4000 years before the Cowell Station, also currently known as Manteca, was established.

In 1861, Joshua Cowell founded the town by claiming 1000 acres and building houses in the area. In 1873, the Central Pacific Rail Road routed its tracts through the town. The town originally called the new train station “Cowell Station” but ultimately changed the name to Monteca.

They say that, the railroad company incorrectly printed the town’s name as Manteca, which translates from Spanish as “Lard.”  The spelling of the name was never corrected, hence Manteca, CA, exists today.  Manteca was incorporated as a city in 1918.

In the early years, Manteca and the Central Valley’s economy was primarily based on farming, cattle and dairy products. Manteca produced many crops including pumpkins, walnuts, and grains.  It also, sent milk and cheese products to San Francisco. Manteca has a long history with the food manufacturing business, as it was home to the Manteca Canning Co. (1914-1964), Spreckels Sugar Co. (1916-1995), and the Kraft Co. (1935-1957). It is also close to the Sharpe Army Depot, Libbey Owens Ford, and Simplot companies.

In 1935, during the depression, the photographer Dorothea Lang took her famous photo of the Dimotakis family on their farm in Manteca, for the Farm Security Administration. That well-known photo and other depression era images are stored at the Library of Congress.  The Dimotakis family still owns the farm today.

In about 1990, the population of Manteca increased as Bay Area families sought more affordable housing.  Manteca still has ties to agriculture and is also a suburban community with residents commuting to the greater San Francisco Bay Area for employment.
