MARTINEZ, CALIFORNIA OVERVIEW

The city of Martinez is the county seat of  Contra Costa County, located in the San Francisco Bay area of Northern California. Nearly 37,000 people make their home in Martinez.

Before the European settlement the Martinez area was the home to bands of the Ohlone people,  hunter gatherers who were sustained by the acorns, roots, berries and plentiful game of the area.

Martinez, like much of the Bay area, had its origins in a Mexican land grant.  In 1823, Ygnacio Martinez, commandant of the Presidio of San Francisco, received a land grant as a reward for his service.  The 18,000 acre grant, known as Rancho El Pinole bordered the Carquinez Strait in what is now known as Contra Costa County.  After Martinez’s death in 1848 his eleven children inherited the estate.

In 1847, Dr. Robert Semple contracted with General Mariano Vallejo to run a ferry service across the Carquinez Strait linking Benicia and Martinez. It was the longest operating ferry service in the S.F. Bay Area and played a major role in the development of Martinez.

Peach, cherry, pear, fig, apricot, and walnut orchards in Martinez helped feed the growing Bay area cities.  A  scientific horticulturist, Dr. John Strentzel, pioneered a revolutionary shipping method that allowed fruit to stay fresh even when transported long distances.  The 800 acre Strentzel ranch produced and shipped hundreds of tons of fruit annually.  Dr. Strentzel’s daughter Louisa married famed explorer and mountaineer John Muir, who managed the Strentzel property  from 1880-1890.  Eventually portions of the ranch were subdivided and sold off to finance Muir’s travels.  Today, the Strentzel /Muir home in Martinez is preserved as a National Historic Site.

Fishing and fish processing in the Carquinez Strait and Sacramento River delta were also an important factor in the economic development of Martinez.  Two canneries were located in Martinez, and thousands of pounds of salmon were exported across the world.

In 1915, Shell Oil Company built a refinery in Martinez, which today has a refining capacity of 160,000 barrels a day.  An Associated Oil refinery was also located nearby.  For many years, the refineries were the largest private sector employers in the area.
