Merced Mesothelioma

MERCED, CALIFORNIA OVERVIEW

The city of Merced is located in the San Joaquin Valley (also known as the Central Valley) in California.  It is the county seat of Merced County. Merced is 56.5 miles from Fresno, 69 miles from Yosemite, 120 miles from Santa Cruz, 130 miles from San Francisco and 275 miles from Los Angeles. According to the 2022 census data, Merced’s population is estimated as 91,563.

The indigenous people in the San Joaquin Valley were the Yokuts Indians.  In 1806, the Spanish Lt-General Gabriel Moraga named a nearby river “El Río de Nuestra Señora de la Merced” which translates to River of Our Lady of Mercy. Both Merced County and Merced city’s names are derived from the nearby Merced River. The city of Merced was incorporated in 1889. And, after a special election in 1872, the Merced County seat was moved to the city of Merced.

From May to September 1942, approximately 4669 Japanese residents from Northern California, including American citizens, were detained in the now Merced County Fairgrounds.  Merced was one of the temporary detention camps established during World War II, until a permanent relocation camp was built in Colorado.

The Union Pacific and Burlington Northern/Santa Fe Railroads continue to pass through the city of Merced. Merced’s economy has relied upon agribusiness and its processing and shipping plants to move agricultural product from the San Joaquin Valley.  From 1946, until the Castle Air Force Base closed in September 1995, Merced relied on the base for employment. Today, the Castle Air Museum is located on the former Castle Air Force Base site.

Although the county and the city are known for the major production of and processing of diverse products, including milk, almonds, cheese and chickens, the city of Merced also has a diversified economy in manufacturing, fabrication, boat construction and distribution facilities.

In the 1970s and 1980s, many Hmong fled Laos from their country’s Civil War and landed in Merced and other areas in the Central Valley. Merced provided various social services to the Hmong through community agencies, including the Merced Lao Family Community Inc., which provided social services to the Hmong. The city also provided programs regarding health care and college classes on the Hmong culture and language.

In 1995, Merced was selected for construction of a new University of California campus. Ultimately, the University of California, Merced opened its doors to students in September 2005. For vacation, Merced has tourist attractions, shopping and plenty of green outdoor places nearby. Merced is a gateway to Yosemite National Park. Merced is also close to Lake Yosemite and the Merced National Wildlife Refuge.
