MONTEREY PARK, CALIFORNIA OVERVIEW

Monterey Park, is located in Southern California, in Los Angeles County.  According to the U.S. Census, Monterey Park’s 2022, estimated population was 58,554.  Monterey Park is 7.6 miles from Los Angeles proper, 23.7 miles from Anaheim, 24.5 miles from Long Beach, and 27 miles from Torrance, California.

The Indigenous residents of the area were the Tongva Native Americans.  They have also been referred to as the Gabrielino-Tongva Tribe.  The Tongva People inhabited the Greater Los Angeles area, including the islands of Santa Catalina, San Nicolas, San Clemente and Santa Barbara. The Native population was decimated by European disease and conflict.

Monterey Park sits on parts of the San Gabriel Archangel Mission and Rancho San Antonio, Mexican Land Grant. Peter Snyder was a developer and settled in Woodland after the Civil War. Peter Garvey is credited as the founder of Monterey Park and indeed Garvey Avenue is named after him. Peter Garvey developed his land and constructed a dam that formed Garvey Lake which is located were Garvey Ranch Park stands today. Peter Garvey subdivided his property and sold off parcels to pay off his debts. Monterey Park was initially called Ramona Acres.

In 1916, Woodland residents united and voted to incorporate as a city to stop the development of a large sewage plant that Alhambra and South Pasadena proposed for the area.  The town was incorporated as a city on May 29, 1916, and named Monterrey Park.  Initially, Monterey Park’s boundaries included the city of Montebello, but in 1920, Montebello broke away from Monterey Park and formed its own city.

Monterey Park has a diverse population of White, Mexican, Japanese, Vietnam, Chinese and other ethnic groups.  The 1990, census showed Monterey Park as the first city with an Asian ancestry majority population in the continental United States. The 2020 census indicated that 64.8% of Monterey Park’s population is Asian. Monterey Park’s Asian businesses established the first suburban Chinatown outside of Los Angeles.  Monterey Park and its surrounding cities in the San Gabriel Valley represent the new vigor and influence of the Chinese community in Los Angeles County.

In 1983, Lily Chen became the first Chinese-American woman to be elected mayor of a United States city. Indeed, delegations from China and Taiwan frequently visited Monterey Park. Also, in the 2000s, many wealthy Chinese immigrants moved to Monterey Park.

Monterey Park is ideally located as it is 7 miles from Los Angeles. It has the advantage of being surrounded by the Long Beach Freeway, (I-710) that allow access to the north, the San Bernardino Freeway (I-10) which provides access to the west, and the Pomona Freeway, SR 60, that allows access to the South.
