MURRIETA, CALIFORNIA OVERVIEW

Murrieta is a city in the Riverside-San Bernardino area in Southern California.  It is in Riverside County.  The United States Census data from 2021, estimates 112,991 residents in the city.  Murrieta is 6.7 miles from Temecula, 37 miles from the city of Riverside, 66 miles from San Diego, 89 miles from Los Angeles and 79 miles from Palm Springs.  Murrieta was settled in the 1800s, but was not incorporated as a city until 1991.

Many tribes inhabited the Temecula Valley, but the Luiseno and Cahuilla people were the central occupants of Murrieta and Western Riverside county. Many Indian artifacts, including tools, pottery and rock art have been found in Riverside County and in the surrounding area.  Mission San Luis Rey de Francia founded in 1798, and Mission San Antonio de Pala founded in 1816, focused on the inland Luiseno populations.

In 1821, Mexico gained independence from Spain.  In 1844, Mexico established the Rancho Pauba and the Temecula Rancho land grants.  In 1848, Mexico ceded California to the United States.  In 1873, brothers, Juan and Ezequiel Murrieta, and two others purchased the Rancho Pauba and Temecula Rancho land grants.  In 1882, Juan Murrieta sold a right of way to the Southern California Railroad.  The first passenger train arrived in Murrieta from San Diego to San Bernardino in 1883.  The area experienced a population boom in 1884, when Juan Murrieta sold over 14,000 acres to the Temecula Land and Water Company which plotted a town for the area. In 1893, Riverside County was established.

Murrieta is centrally located between Los Angeles and San Diego counties.  In the 1980’s, another population boom occurred when residential communities were built in Murrieta for locals and suburban commuters working in Los Angeles, Orange and San Diego Counties.
