NORWALK, CALIFORNIA OVERVIEW

Norwalk, is located in Southern California, in Los Angeles County.  According to the 2022, U.S. Census Bureau, Norwalk’s estimated population is 95,537.  Norwalk is 16.1 miles from Los Angeles, 16.8 miles from Long Beach, 20 miles from Santa Torrance and 18.1 miles from Santa Ana, California.  Norwalk was incorporated as a city in 1957.

 

 

According to Pepperdine University, the indigenous tribes in Los Angeles County were the Chumash, Tongva, and Kizh tribes. Norwalk was developed on a part of the Rancho Los Nietos, an original 1784, land grant. In 1848, the land was subdivided.  The Sproul brothers purchased 463 acres in 1869. Construction on the Anaheim branch of the Southern Pacific railroad began in the summer of 1873,  The line from Norwalk, followed a similar path that is now the Santa Ana Freeway. The last spike of the railroad was set at the end 1873, and the railroad began service on January 14, 1875. The Anaheim Branch Railroad first crossed the North-walk area in the early 1870s.  In 1874, the town’s name was recorded as Norwalk.

Early in the 19th century, Norwalk was known for logging, numerous dairy farms, and ranching. It also had extensive sugar beet farms – in fact, the highest number of sugar beet farms in Southern California. 

Norwalk is centrally located, as it is midway between Los Angeles and Orange Counties. Like most of California, Norwalk has a diverse population and has had rapid growth. It is home to the California Metropolitan State Hospital, a psychiatric and mental health facility.  It is also home to other businesses, including Bally Total Fitness, Cerritos College and the Los Angeles County Recorder-Register.
