ORANGE, CALIFORNIA OVERVIEW

The City of Orange is located in Orange County, in the southern part of the state of California. 30 miles south of Los Angeles.  An estimated 140,000 people make their home in Orange.

Originally called Richland, the town of Orange began when Attorneys Alfred Chapman and Andrew Glassell who took possession of  nearly 1400 acres of land from the Rancho Santiago de Santa Ana, as their  fee for legal services.   Originally, the town was agricultural, with plantings including barley, corn and oats, and grapes.  After the failure of the grape crop, orange groves were planted  and by the 1920s oranges became the city’s premier crop. By 1929, Orange was growing over $12 million in oranges and shipping hundreds train-carloads of oranges each year.

In 1880, the Southern Pacific Railroad built a depot in Orange. In 1887,  the Santa Fe Railroad also extended a line into the town. The resulting competition lowered the cost of travel and led to population growth in the area. The population was 600, when the city was incorporated in 1888.

The City of Orange hosted 2 local newspapers during these years, the Orange Tribune (later renamed the Orange Post), and the Orange News (later renamed the Orange Daily News).

By the 1920s, about a third of Orange was employed in the citrus industry.  The local growers formed cooperative packing houses, and in turn, these cooperatives formed the Southern California Fruit Exchange, later known as “Sunkist”.   The headquarters for this agricultural cooperative was constructed in Spanish Revival style on Orange’s Glassell Street, close to the railroad lines.

The City of Orange’s downtown plaza was created in 1886, and the original fountain installed in 1887.    The Plaza’s current centerpiece- a Westinghouse light-up electric fountain- was installed in 1937 and is now the symbol of “Old Towne Orange”. Plaza Park maintains its original layout. The tree-lined Plaza is still the  heart of Orange, and hosts community, civic and entertainment events.  The plaza is now on the National Registry of Historic Places. The historic district covers 1 square mile and includes over  than 1,300 homes and buildings. Orange attracts tourists to its downtown, with its nay antique shops, galleries and restaurants.

Orange, California

During World War II era, The 30th Field Artillery Battalion was stationed in Orange.  Returning servicemen  after the war years led to a  huge increase in the population of Orange county.  The City of Orange doubled in size to over 8 acres.  Between 1950 and 1960, the population doubled to over 26,000.

By the late 1990s, the orange orchards were increasingly subdivided and sold off to create residential neighborhoods. The Orange County Fruit Exchange closed in 1994. It is now a gallery, known as the Exchange Fine Arts Gallery.
