Palo Alto Mesothelioma

Palo Alto, California Overview

Palo Alto is a city in Santa Clara County, California, and is located within the San Francisco Bay Area. According to the 2022 United States Census Data, an estimated 66,010 people reside in Palo Alto.  The city covers an area of 25.8 square miles in Santa Clara County.  Palo Alto has been transformed from its agrarian origins and today is considered the birthplace of Silicon Valley.

The Ohlone Indians were the indigenous inhabitants of Santa Clara County, including the city of  Palo Alto.  Their way of life was changed forever with the European conquest and the establishment of Mission Santa Clara de Asis in 1777.   The Ohlone tribe was decimated by disease, starvation and conflict by the Spanish Mission system.  The Ohlone and other tribes were also bounty hunted for their scalps by white settlers in the 1800s.  Today, the Ohlone Tribes continue to fight for Federal and State recognition as aboriginal Indian tribes in California.

Palo Alto sits on parts of several land grants, including the Rancho Rinconada del Arroyo de San Francisquito, which is currently Old Palo Alto, and Rancho La Purisima Concepcion, previously owned by Juana Briones, a pioneer Mixed race (Latina/Native American/Black) property owner.  Her grandparents and parents walked from New Spain (Mexico) with Spain’s de Anza and Portola expeditions to Alta California.

Juana Briones sold most of her land including Rancho La Purisima to the Murphy family, who came to California with the first wagon train to arrive in the west coast.  In 1889, Juana Briones died in Mayfield (now part of Palo Alto).  Juana Briones Elementary School and Juana Briones Park are named for her, and several streets incorporate her husband and children’s names.

Leland and Jane Stanford lost their only son Leland Stanford Junior in 1884, to Typhoid fever. To honor their son’s memory they created Stanford University. In 1891, with Timothy Hopkins the Stanford’s launched the new town of University Park which was later named Palo Alto, after the Stanford family’s  “Palo Alto” (Tall Trees) farm.  Palo Alto was incorporated on April 23, 1894.

The town of Mayfield was formed in 1855. On July 2, 1925, Palo Alto annexed Mayfield Township, which is now southern Palo Alto. Beginning in the 1950s through 1979, Palo Alto expanded its territory when Palo Alto annexed large areas of developed and undeveloped land, including the Stanford Shopping Center area, Stanford Research Park, several roadways, Foothills Nature Preserve (formerly Foothills Park), Arastradero Preserve, Barron Park and marshland bordering the San Francisco Bay.

Palo Alto is known as a leader in science and technology. William Hewlett and David Packard created their successful HP computer products in Palo Alto, which was the basis for the formation of Silicon Valley. Several other early developers began in Palo Alto including, Federal Telegraph Company whose research piloted contemporary radio and telecommunications, the Fairchild Semiconductor where the first integrated circuit that could be manufactured commercially was created (which eventually changed the semiconductor industry) and Varian Medical Systems which advanced the fields of radiosurgery, that subsequently contributed to helping the astronauts land on the moon.  Also, other high-tech companies were founded or originally headquartered in Palo Alto including, Apple, Google, Facebook, Logitech, Tesla, Intuit, PayPal, Lockheed Martin and many more.
