Paramount California Mesothelioma

PARAMOUNT, CALIFORNIA OVERVIEW

Paramount, is located in Los Angeles County.  According to the 2022 U.S. Census, the estimated population is 51,653.  Paramount is 12 miles from the city of Los Angeles, 11 miles from Long Beach, 14 miles from Torrance, and about 18 miles from Anaheim, California.

The Indigenous residents living in the Paramount area were the Tongva Indians.  The Tongva tribes inhabited approximately a 4000 mile territory in the greater Los Angeles area.  In 1771, the Spaniards referred to the Native Americans as the Gabrielino Indians.  They have also been referred to as the Gabrielino-Tongva Tribe.

The city of Paramount sits on part of Rancho San Pedro, a 75,000 acre land grant originally granted from the Spanish crown to Juan Jose Dominguez in 1784.  In 1828, after Mexico gained independence from Spain, the Dominguez heirs secured their legal claim to 48,000 acres of  Rancho San Pedro from the Mexican Government.  When Mexico ceded California to the United States Government the Dominguez heirs successfully confirmed their claim to 43,119 acres of Rancho San Pedro through the United States patent process in 1858.

In the 1880s, the townships of Clearwater and Hynes were agriculturally based with a variety of crops, including the largest hay crops in the world and dairy farms that eventually consisted of 25,000 cows.  In the early 1900s, the area was the center of the hay and dairy industry in Los Angeles and Orange Counties. The towns were known as “The Milk Shed of Los Angeles” and “The World’s Largest Hay Market.”

The price of hay was set daily by local farmers while conversing under the Paramount Hay Tree.  Their price was quoted in the Chicago and New York market as the international price for hay.  In 2004, the Paramount Hay Tree was designated a California Historical Landmark marker (No. 1038).

Paramount was created by the merger of the Clearwater and Hynes townships. In 1948, the unincorporated town of Paramount was established when the postmaster general merged the post offices of Clearwater and Hynes.  Paramount incorporated on January 30, 1957, in order to stave off annexation by the neighboring cities of Long Beach, Bellflower and Southgate.

After World War II the agricultural land and dairy farms gave way to uncontrolled residential and industrial growth.  By 1970, Paramount’s overbuilt environment led to blight.  In 1981, the Rand Corporation cited Paramount as an urban disaster. Paramount instituted changes to remove abandoned buildings and renovate the city with a new downtown, revitalized neighborhoods, increased parks and spacious landscaping and fencing.  In 1988, Paramount turned itself around and was awarded the title “All-American City” by the National Civic League.

Today, Paramount is a energetic suburban community with a diverse population, including a large Latino community.  According to the 2020 census, Paramount is 81.3% Latino, 20.7% White and 8.9% African American.
