PASADENA, CALIFORNIA OVERVIEW

Pasadena, is located in the San Gabriel Valley in Southern California, in Los Angeles County.  According to the 2020 Census, the population is over 138,000. Pasadena is 11 miles northeast of Los Angeles demographically part of the greater Los Angeles area.   Pasadena was incorporated as a city in 1886.

The Indigenous residents of the area were the Hahamogna Native Americans which were a part of the Tongva Tribe.  They lived in villages along the Arroyo Seco, throughout the canyons and continuing south to the Los Angeles river.  The current Gabrielino Trail is part of the old Tongva foot trail, which is one of the oldest footpaths still in use today.

In 1771, Father Junipero Serra founded the fourth Mission in California, the San Gabriel Archangel Mission in the Los Angeles area.  Father Junipero Serra referred to the Native Americans as the Gabrielino Indians.  They have also been referred to as the Gabrielino-Tongva Tribe.  The San Gabriel Mission exploited Indian labor and became wealthy, with orchards, vineyards and herds.

In 1826, part of the San Gabriel Mission was gifted to Eulalia Perez de Guillen and became known as the Rancho el Rincon de San Pascual.  In 1843, the grant passed to Manuel Garfias, and he built the oldest home in Pasadena today the “El Adobe Flores.”  In 1874, a group of farmers from Indiana founded the Indiana Colony.  In 1875, the Colony named the settlement Pasadena, which was Native American for “Crown of the Valley.”

Pasadena is known worldwide for its New Years’ day parade, the Tournament of Roses.  It is also known, for the Rose Bowl Football game. The Rose Bowl Stadium is home to the UCLA Bruins Football team, has hosted the 1984 Summer Olympics and the final game of the 1994 Men’s FIFA World Cup, and 1999 Women’s FIFA World Cup.
