PETALUMA, CALIFORNIA OVERVIEW

Petaluma, is a city in Northern California in Sonoma County. The town of Petaluma was incorporated on April 12, 1858 and is one of the oldest cities in California. The 2022, U.S. Census estimates Petaluma’s population as 58,652 residents.  Petaluma is 39 miles from San Francisco, 32 miles from Vallejo, 34.7 miles from Mare Island Naval Shipyard, 53.4 miles from Travis Air Force Base and 83 miles from Stockton, California.

Native American tribes have lived in Sonoma County from approximately 10,000 to 12,000 years ago.  The indigenous residents of the land that is now Petaluma are the Coast Miwok tribe.  The Miwoks had a village along the river about three and a half miles northeast from where Petaluma is today, called Pe’ta (meaning flat) and lu’ma (meaning back).  This has been interpreted as the backside of the hill.  Petaluma’s name comes from the Miwok’s Pe’ta lu’ma village.

The city of Petaluma sits on part of the 67,000 acre, Rancho Petaluma, originating from two Mexican land grant given by the Mexican Governor Jose Figueroa to General Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo in 1834 and the second grant in 1844.  General Vallejo employed thousands of indigenous workers to work Rancho Petaluma.  He had 10,000 head of cattle and 24,000 sheep and large herds of horses on Rancho Petaluma. Basically, Petaluma was launched by General Vallejo’s enterprises on the land that eventually encompassed Petaluma.  General Vallejo’s adobe home in Petaluma is a National Historic Landmark.

The 1849 California Gold Rush brought thousands of people from the east coast to San Francisco and the greater Bay Area, including Sonoma County. Petaluma became a major transit point during the Gold Rush since the Petaluma River connected directly to San Francisco ports. Petaluma was able to transport goods, services and the 49er’s between San Francisco and the Sonoma Coast.

Petaluma’s early economy was agriculturally based and established by its ability to grow, farm and transport meat, poultry egg, dairy, cheese, vegetables, potatoes, apples, berries and wine to San Francisco and other growing cities in the 19th Century.  Petaluma was known for its grain and chicken processing plants, as well as, the production of millions of eggs.  In 1857, Petaluma shipped 187,000 lbs. of butter, 186,000 lbs. of cheese and 21,000 dozen eggs to San Francisco markets. Petaluma was ultimately marketed as the “Egg Capital of the World.”  In 1869, Lyman Byce invented the egg incubator in Petaluma.

Today, Petaluma is also known for it’s high-technology and telecommunications firms, its historic architecture, its quaint downtown and famous restaurants.  Petaluma residents have access to Helen Putman Regional Park which encompasses miles of open spaces for hiking, biking and horseback riding.  Many movies have been filmed in the unique town, including, American Graffiti, Peggy Sue Got Married and Inventing the Abbotts.
