Rancho Cordova Mesothelioma

RANCHO CORDOVA, CALIFORNIA OVERVIEW

Rancho Cordova is located in Northern California, in Sacramento County. Rancho Cordova’s current population is 80,598.  Rancho Cordova is situated 18 miles from the city of Sacramento and about 100 miles from San Francisco. Although Rancho Cordova was settled in the1850s, during the Gold Rush, it was not incorporated as a city until July 2003.

Rancho Cordova lies in the Sacramento Valley.  The indigenous people in the Rancho Cordova area were the Valley and Plains Miwok/Me-Wuk Indians that lived South of the American River. The Buena Vista Rancheria of the Me-Wuk Indians have been a federally recognized Indian tribe since 1985.

Rancho Cordova sits on part of the Rancho Rio de los Americanos land grant. The settlement was initially named Mayhew’s Crossing and Hangtown Crossing during the Gold Rush. It was later renamed Mayhew Station and then Mills Station.  Rancho Cordova was also situated along the 1849, Gold Rush route where way stations were positioned roughly a mile apart.  Many of the stations became post offices and the pony express stopped at Mills Station which was along the route.  The town was also referred to as Cordova Vineyards and Cordova Village but in 1955, it was called Rancho Cordova when the Rancho Cordova’s post office was founded.

In the 1800s and early 1900s, Rancho Cordova was known for its vineyards.  The wine from Cordova Vineyards was served in President Theodore Roosevelt’s White House. During World War II, many military and other personnel worked at nearby Mather Air Force Base but sought housing in the surrounding area, including in Rancho Cordova.  Also, Aerojet General Corporation moved to Rancho Cordova and brought many workers into the area in the 1960s.

Eventually, the vineyards and farms gave way to residential development.  Roland Federspiel and his two partners developed the area and constructed homes naming the streets after the wine grapes.  The U.S. Postal Service decided to let the developers use the name Rancho Cordova.  Mather Air Force base closed in 1993 and is now Mather Regional Park and a civilian Mather Airport.
