RANCHO CUCAMONGA, CALIFORNIA OVERVIEW

The city of Rancho Cucamonga is located in Southern California, and is in San Bernardino County. Rancho Cucamonga is 37 miles from Los Angeles and just south of the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains and the Angeles National Forest. In 1977, the communities of Alta Loma, Cucamonga, and Etiwanda voted to incorporate, forming the city of Rancho Cucamonga. According to the 2020 census, Rancho Cucamonga has over 174,000 residents.

The indigenous people in the area were the Kukamongan Native Americans, which likely belonged to the Tongva (or Gabrielino) Indians.  Anthropologists believe that the Gabrielino Indians may have been one of the largest indigenous populations, in the North American continent. In 1769, Gaspar de Portola led a Spanish expedition in the Rancho Cucamonga area. In 1839, Tiburcio Tapia was issued a land-grant subsequently establishing Rancho Cucamonga.  Tapia established a winery (the oldest in the state and the 2nd oldest the United States). In 1858, John Rains purchased Rancho Cucamonga, and built his home there in 1860.  The Rains’ home was restored and is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Many famous transportation trails and roads went right through Rancho Cucamonga city, including the Cajon Pass, the Mohave, old Spanish and Santa Fe trails, El Camino Real, the Butterfield stagecoach and the ground-breaking Route 66.  Rancho Cucamonga and the surrounding area’s economy was agricultural with citrus groves, peaches, olives and vineyards.  It is home to the oldest commercial winery in California, the Thomas Winery going back as far as 1839.

Today Rancho Cucamonga is mostly residential but has distribution centers, aerospace industries and manufacturing companies. Rancho Cucamonga is also home to many companies, including, CMC Steel, Amphastar Pharmaceutical and Big Lots Distribution Center.
