Redlands Mesothelioma

REDLANDS, CALIFORNIA OVERVIEW

The city of Redlands is in Southern California, in San Bernardino County. It is 10 miles from San Bernardino city, 28 miles from Ontario, 44 miles from Palm Springs and 63 miles from Los Angeles. According to the United States Census Bureau 2022 data, Redlands’s population is estimated at 73,849 residents.

The indigenous Native Americans in the Redlands region were the Tongva, Serrano and Cahuilla Tribes who lived in the region thousands of years before the Spanish Missionaries arrived.  In the early 1800’s the Serrano and Cahuilla Indians built the oldest engineered irrigation channel  known as the “Zanja” in San Bernardino County.  The Zanja played a critical role in the development of the Inland Empire and paved the way for the Spaniards’ Mission developing the “Estancia.”  The Indians used the shoulder blade bones of cattle as shovels to carve out the 12-mile ditch by hand.

In 1819, the Mission San Gabriel Rancho San Bernardino, established the “Estancia”—also known as the San Bernardino Asistencia which was utilized for cattle grazing.  In the 1930s, the Works Project Authority re-created the Asistencia by building replicas of the Asistencia’s buildings about a mile from the original site.  These replicas are still in existence today.

Redlands is one of the oldest cities in California and lies on part of the old Rancho San Bernardino Mexican Land Grant.  In 1851, the Mormons purchased Rancho San Bernardino but vacated the land in 1857.  The Southern Pacific and Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroads arrived in the 1880s, resulting in a population and land expansion in the area. Frank E. Brown and E.G. Judson established the city of Redlands.  The city of Redlands was incorporated on December 3, 1888.  Brown and Judson named the city for the red adobe color of its soil.

The first citrus grove was planted in 1882. For 75 years the area was known as the largest naval orange-producing region in the world, with 15,000 acres of citrus groves. Prospect park currently has the oldest grove, with orange trees that are over 120 years old.

World War II brought many changes to the area.  Today, most of the citrus groves have been replaced by suburban housing.   Also, the nearby Norton Air Force Base (May 1942- April 1994) and the Lockheed Propulsion Company (1954-1994) brought many military and civilians to the area, expanding the housing boon.

Redlands is part of the Riverside-San Bernardino-Ontario Metropolitan Statistical Area which is comprised of Riverside and San Bernardino counties, and is often called the “Inland Empire.” The area is bordered by Los Angeles and Orange counties on the west, and on the east by the states of Nevada and Arizona. The 2022 population estimate for the Riverside-San Bernardino-Ontario Metropolitan Statistical Area is over 4.6 million people.
