Redondo Beach Mesothelioma

REDONDO BEACH, CALIFORNIA OVERVIEW

Redondo Beach, is a coastal city in Los Angeles County.  It was incorporated as a city on April 29, 1892.  The US Census 2022 Data estimates its population as 68,918.  Redondo Beach is 3.5 miles from Torrance, 17.6 miles from Long Beach and 31 miles from Los Angeles, California.

The Indigenous residents of the land that is now Redondo Beach were the Tongva-Gabrieleno Indians.  The Tongva-Gabrieleno culture was over 7000 years old when the Spaniards arrived in the area in the 1700s.  The natives subsisted on sea food including sea bass, lobster and halibut. The natives also traded salt from the nearby Redondo Salt Lake with other Indians.

Redondo Beach sits on part of an old Spanish land grant called Rancho San Pedro that was awarded to Juan Jose Dominguez in 1784, by the Spanish Crown.  It is believed to be one of the earliest land grants bestowed on an individual in California.  After military and legal battles the land was re-granted to the Dominguez family in 1823.  The land was used for farming and grazing through the early 1800s.

In the late 1800s, Redondo Beach had 3 piers which were utilized as the first Port of Los Angeles County. The Railroad and Steam Ships delivered freight loads of oil and lumber to the port which was transported to San Francisco and San Diego. In 1890, the Hotel Redondo opened and thousands of tourist flocked to the area for relaxation and fun in the sun.

In 1889, the Redondo Beach Improvement Company, owned by Robert Thompson and John Ainsworth developed and sold lots that eventually became the city of Redondo Beach. However, by 1912, San Pedro became the primary deep port for Los Angeles and the Railroad and Pacific Steam Ship Co. stopped using Redondo Beach’s ports.  Nevertheless, Redondo Beach was still popular for fishing, and tourists.

In the early 1900s, Henry Huntington brought George Freeth from Hawaii to demonstrate surfing for guests at the Hotel Redondo. A surfing phenomenon took hold and Redondo Beach became known for California’s first modern surfers.

Today, Redondo Beach is a bedroom community for the Greater Los Angeles Area. It is a tourist resort town with current marine facilities, and varied activities on the Redondo Beach Pier.  It is also known for its Lobster Festival, restaurants, hotels and shops, as well as surfing, biking trails and beach volleyball.
